I boarded a train yesterday evening about 5.30 at Pinner. When we arrived at Harrow we switched trains as the train on plat 5 was leaving 1st. The train was described as a Baker St All Stns. The Train Proceeded to Run Non Stop To Wembley Park.... Via The Local Lines

I'd have to check through the TTNs, but isn't this part of the rerouting for when events are on at Wembley?

No, the events return traffic sees more trains on the fast line, but none are booked to run "fast down the local."
There are occasions where fasts have to run down the local, normally if the fast is blocked by something else. Normally, even if the describer is showing wrong information, the driver will let people know. Do I gather the train was hopped onto at the last moment? Perhaps after the driver had advised everybody on board what was going on?

I cannot understand the stress people put themselves through swapping trains at Harrow on the Hill. It often comes unstuck, like the time I was detraining on Platform 6 when an all-stations Aldgate came into Platform 5. The ensuing cavalry charge from a perfectly good local line train on to a train going nowhere was a sight to behold. As were the faces of the thwarted when the train on Platform 5 closed up and departed. But then I suppose that was all London Underground's fault too.

There may have been a gap in the service and there was another local train behind perhaps?

The Train We Had Just Got Off was a Local Aldgate

I remember for a number of years all southbound fast trains off peak running via the local lines.

Oh that was rubbish! The fast Baker Streets always got delayed behind a stopping train. They became a waste of time. When the depot entrance points just south of wembley were moved the signalling could be altered to stop that.

When the depot entrance points just south of wembley were moved the signalling could be altered to stop that. There is no need to use the past tense. All you have said is still very much the case even though the fast trains are back on the fast line. Oh and despite the additional route to the depot being installed the signalling at Wembley has yet to be altered to alleviate the situation. Mind you the timetable is as much at fault as the signalling.

Much of the time, the fast Baker Streets have a "perceived" delay. They are given recovery time between Harrow and Wembley and often arrive at the home signals before the preceding local line service has cleared Wembley. Obviously, a better solution would be to allow trains to get into platform 6 - but this signalling solution has been dropped at present (it costs money.)

Is there really any need for the fast to stop at Wembley Park at all? I don't notice many people getting on or off at platforms 1/6 so all it seems to do is extend the journey time.

The other thing also to consider is that passengers, who would normally go south from platform 5 or north from platform 2, wouldn't normally go from 6 or 1 without being told - and I bet they're not told very often, if at all.
Moreover, anyone "in the know" might try and rush over the bridge to 6 or 1 if that train is first - bet most of them would miss it because I'm sure there is no general indicator at Wembley Park which says which platform the first south- or northbound train departs from, or wasn't until recently.

Compare this post with those written in this thead and you will really see we can't please everyone all of the time. Or should that be anybody at any time?
