Gents; when we had the old "hurry up" signals (speed control) on the DR they were associated with ISD's (instantaneous speed detectors). I know there is one at Acton Town homes and West Ken Tunnel mouth eastbound and there also used to be one at West Hampstead southbound homes but are there any more still around the combine anywhere?

How did the ISDs work? In what way did they differ from ordinary speed detectors?

I think ISD was a term used for the inductor rails, as they could detect if you slow down to the correct speed while still passing over it, which speed control using track circuits couldn't do.
I've got a bit of info on Inductors at home which I'll dig out, though most of my notes are now confined to the loft.
They're still around, the Rayners Lane branch as a few, there are some around Acton Town and in a few other places, though there are no longer any spares around and they're progressively being decommissioned.

Somewhere on this forum is a post of the picture of Acton town from the west looking down the bank. A "driver's eye view" In that picture/post is shown an ISD with a simple explanation of it's function/purpose/operation.

Ah! Now I understand what you mean! I have heard of those things before -I just wasn't sure what they were called in LU parlance.
