I'll take the A303 near Stonehenge for the inset.

I would agree a flipped photo of the A303 on Salisbury Plain, just after Stonehenge heading west.

Today looks very tough! A= somewhere on the Central line B= could be Theydon Bois, is it reversed? C= Goldhawk Road or Shepherd's Bush perhaps D= Baron's Court?

You have A, B and the inset correct. Here is some clues for C and D. And the answers so far: Station A: Hendon Central - bridge viewed from northbound platform [Chris M] Station B: Theydon Bois - from car park [Chris M] Inset: A303 east of Stonehenge [Chris M] *Click any of the images for a larger version*

C is Latimer road, just D, the link and the odd one out to find now. Below are the unmodified versions of A-C (click for a larger version) Station B: Theydon Bois - from car park [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Station C: Latimer Road - east end of eastbound [Chris M] (click for a larger version)

D is not a Northern Line station

D is not a Northern Line station You know I've been wracking my brains over D because it is so familiar to me and yet four years in retirement and away from London it is harder to place what seems so familiar. Could D be Ealing Common ?

D isn't Ealing Common, nor is it isn't maintained by Tubelines.

As people have seemingly given up on identifying it, I will reveal it is Rickmansworth. So the stations are Hendon Central, Theydon Bois, Latimer Road and Rickmansworth, but which is the odd one out, and why?

Now I know why it was so familiar, I spent almost a year working on all the Met stations commissioning the longline PA systems and used to drive to all stations north of Baker Street but that was way back in 1987! After 1996 I never worked anywhere north of Preston Road on the Met though.

Well I can think of several reasons for the odd one out to be Hendon Central - island platform
- built for the tube (as distinct from surface line)
- never had steam service
- opened in 20th Century
or Rickmansworth - one word name
- 'complex' track layout/interlocking (others are on plain line)
- served by National Rail services
or Theydon Bois - only one in the East of Greenwich
- transferred from a main line railway to LT.
And doubtless there's some reason I can't think of for it to be Latimer Road...

All true, particularly your last statement. However none of them get you the points.

Latimer Road is the only one south of the North Circular Road?

Roads are relevant, but the north circ isn't

Latimer Road isn't the last stop (heading outwards) before the line crosses a Motorway. Theydon Bois and Rickmansworth are the last stops before the Central and Met cross the M25 and Hendon Central is the last stop before the Northern line crosses the M1
Latimer Road would have not been the odd one out when the A3220 the was still the M41 - perhaps why that particular stop was chosen.
