In connection with other stuff I've been looking through a small selection of my Sectional Appendices, and I noticed the following in the 1937 edtion of the LMS Midland Division SA instructions for the electrified part of the LT&S, particularly WRT Barking station: Reversing of trains:-
No.3 Platform Plunger on second roof column from east end of station; when pressed fully in, signs fixed (for 6-car trains) on the second roof column east of the lavatory and (for 8-car trains) on the side of the footbridge stanchion will be illuminated to display a white triangular light.
No.4 Platform Plunger on second roof column from east end of station; when pressed fully in, signs fixed (for 6-car trains) on the second roof column east of the lavatory and (for 8-car trains) on the first lamp post west of lavatory will be illuminated to display a white triangular light.
The respective starting signals will remain at Danger until the sign is illuminated. Now, ∇ is the symbol for 'stepping back' in the WTTs, I wonder if the white triangular light was the inspiration for the ∇ symbol being used - especially in the Met. galleys for No. 2 WTT 170 (9/6/58) when the reconstruction of the area around Barking started. I wonder.......
