The track bashers should be busy this weekend - thanks to Network Rail engineering work, the District is suspended, interestingly enough, between Plaistow and East Ham.
This will probably be the first time in a long time that East Ham (FE) has seen regular use as an emergency reversing point; I think one of the last T/Ops to run over it was aspect, back in 2006. Does anyone know what type of engineering works could be undertaken by Network Rail that would force a closure of the District?

First in a long time?
East Ham was reversing not that long ago.

Could be work on the OHLE, which might require gantry/ ladders to be brought over the LU tracks or placed on them?

East Ham was used to reverse trains East to West last Friday, following the Whitechapel signal failure!
Back in 2002 there was an Upminster - East Ham service for weekend engineering work. I remember it well because it was my first day of job training, so the first time I actually drove a train.

as the westbound is so close to the c2c line this is sometimes usual pratice to see a suspension on the district

Pity they won't return the favour though Anyone know if any of the westbound track is likely to get replaced this decade?

again its abit complicated and usually if they do a track replacement they either put up a temp barrier or have a possession on the c2c aswell so expect that to be one of the last areas to be changed

BUMP.
While I was at Plaistow yesterday I noticed that both sides of the eastbound island were being used to reverse the service - it appeared to me that trains from Richmond and Ealing were alternating between platform 2 and platform 3. Was the entire Richmond/Ealing service successfully reversed at Plaistow or were some trains short-tripped at Tower Hill alongside the Wimbledon branch services?

Upminster - East Ham (every 10 minutes ) Plaistow - Richmond (every 15 minutes ) Plaistow - Ealing Broadway (every 15 minutes ) Tower Hill - Wimbledon (every 15 minutes) Edgware Road - Wimbledon (every 15 minutes ) High Street Kensington - Kensington (Olympia) (every 15 minutes)

We were reversing east to west at East Ham early last year due to the Gospel Oak to Barking track being replaced that runs along side of us at Barking.

I was performing on the west side of the shutdown on Friday. It seemed, at the time, all Richmond trains were running from the bay platform and all Ealing trains from the main (platform 2). (I am pleased to say I got to perform both, ..having not previously managed any Plaistow moves ...not even the bay !)
Also the NR platform describers on the Richmond road seemed unable to cope with Plaistow as a destination and they all showed Tower Hill !
Today i was on East Ham - Upminster.
As for Hornchurch, one evening peak last week (thursday i think), two trains were asked to reverse there due to late running ...most unusual !!!! Can't think of the last timetabled Hornchurch reverse use due to engineering works ...not been one since I've been on the District. Though I recollect them from the very distant past.

as Aspect noted, Richmonds are indeed booked into the bay and Ealings into pfm 2 at Plaistow on all 3 days when TTN48/07 operates, the only exceptions being early morning/late night
I travelled on the District last night post 22.00. The main service, ie the Richmonds & Ealings appeared to be holding up well and operating very close to booked times, however the Edgware Rd - Wimbledon (and the Circle ?) appeared to be some way off the mark. I waited at Edgware Road to drop down to Earls Court for well over 10 minutes with absolutely no sign of a train carrying the number 70 to 74 to be seen in the vicinity of Edgware Road station. I eventually gave up and went via Hammersmith Met!

How does a train reverse at Hornchurch?

How does a train reverse at Hornchurch? As with many locations it is done either by using a wrong road station starter move (this would be the case at this location if reversing East to West) or if West to East would be by means of a Main Line shunt move. To add a bit of flesh to this, a wrong road move is by means of a colour light signal which permits the T/Op to leave in passenger service from what is normally the 'entry' end of the platform. If the main line shunt, the train would be detrained on arrival, shunted forward (under clear signals) to a 'limit of shunt' mark, the T/Op would change ends and then when a shunt signal clears would shunt the train (subject to any othet signals) back to the eastbound platform. Hope that helps.
