In this thread TP asked if I had the WTT for June 1950 - I do now; I also have the appropriate photographs to hand from the 'Underground Train File (surface stock)' - one set is no problem - the other ! The two photographs in question are of H and Q stock - the H stock being on p37 - it was thought that this was set 38 - and in the WTT there is indeed an H38; however the second photograph on the bottom of p46 is of Q stock. Both angelislington and myself (I sought a second opinion ) agree that the set number is 48. Slight problem; there is no Q48 working booked - in the 40s there are: H41, Q42, R43, Q44, Q45, Q47, R48, Q49; 46 isn't immediately apparent. In the Xx8 series there are F8, F68 (and F stock did work to Richmond [p33/71]) Q28, Q78, H38, R18. I think there's quite a bit of digging around in the WTT to do to-morrow, as it would be quite pleasant to tie the photographs into a time, as we know the date exactly. Watch this space.

Could it be that the booked R48 train failed (the R stock were still brand new then) and it was replaced by a Q stock working?

Possibly; however, with the photograph in question the leading car was G stock.
Yes: G stock.
I wonder if it was a 'scratch' set...........

I have come to the conclusion that this was a block train made up of whatever they had available. Examination of various photos taken through the years shows that they made up trains with whatever stock was available at the time. They were still doing it in the sixties when I started working. It was common for trains to be Q6 instead of R6 or whatever. They normally tried to keep uncoupling trains of the right stock so theyy could couple again in the evenings, otherwise it was a free for all. There are even photos of train made up of all motor cars.

The answers to when the two photographs were taken are as TP quite correctly guessed around 7p.m. The 'scratch' set (R48) was booked to be passing westbound through East Ham at 6.16½ : analysis and his deductive reasoning was only 4 minutes out for the H stock: analysis as H38 was booked to be passing through East Ham westbound at 7.4p.m. There is also an undated picture of F stock from an almost identical location (and I think on the same day) in the 'Underground Train File' on p38, I'll have a peer (because I like the 'tanks') to see if they fit into the same sort of window of the photographer being on the platform at about 6-7pm, fits nicely with having a bit of a grice on the way home from a job in the city. Edit: I love it when a hunch is proved! Clickety click set 10 of F stock was booked to go through East Ham at 6.12p.m. on a working to Acton Town. ;D

Having 'clickety clicked', a question. How common was it in those days for a train to start from one depot and stable at another the opposite end, as in this case?

Interesting...
A couple of questions:
Was there any logic to the allocation of train numbers? - they seem random, both as regards depot and stock type.
While sometimes there was no choice, was there generally any diagramming as to which train would form which train the following day?
Do today's diagrams show the same variety and mixture of start and points?

Was there any logic to the allocation of train numbers? - they seem random, both as regards depot and stock type. Start time across the combine - earliest starter is No 1 - I was going to mention this in the summary, but I can say in passing that it 'rolls over' the normal day from the point of view of the analysis reference - I need to do a bit more checking to prove it (it's only a gut feeling with this particular WTT) but Q1 was the first starter from Little Ilford at 12.37am (although for the table above it started at Northfields 7.35am the day before ;D) Compare the data extraction above with the 1950 RS working sheets and it is far from random - what is difficult to calculate is exactly what happened overnight with intra-depot allocations, plus exactly when things were diagrammed - eg getting the tanks to certain places where high capacity was needed. I didn't bother putting the times in, as that would require an awful lot more work, sorry. While sometimes there was no choice, was there generally any diagramming as to which train would form which train the following day? Do today's diagrams show the same variety and mixture of start and points? I think that the stock type was generally the same the next day, some locations were quite straightforward to work out - again look at the detailed images from the WTTs and you get a clearer picture of what comes into roost and what goes off again. To answer the question about to-day's diagrams system-wide isn't that easy - depots have closed (Little Ilford Cromwell), depots have opened (Stonebridge Park, Upminster), and depots are no longer used for the District (Northfields), places are also not used Plaistow (Bay Road), South Ken (Bay Road) and platforms are rarely used. However present day timetables have separate 'depot working' and 'rolling stock working' pages so changeover turns are easier to spot eg. Walthamstow/Victoria/Brixton outstablers. Bear in mind too that I haven't included the uncoupling information - you can get a clue to that from the aggregated bits of units that are worked back at the end of the day. I'll leave it there, because I'm an utter amateur compared to others.

Hmm. Rearranging the table and inserting the start time so it increases as you go down the page gives you this: Number | AM start time | AM Start Depot | Q28 | 3.53 | Hammersmith | R43 | 3.53 | Ealing Common | H23 | 4.30 | East Ham (LIS) | H52 | 4.34 | Ealing Common | Q39 | 4.36 | Parsons Green | H66 | 4.48 | East Ham (LIS) | H38 | 4.58 | Parsons Green | H34 | 5.02 | Parsons Green | R81 | 5.02 | East Ham (LIS) | Q37 | 5.03 | Ealing Common | Q19 | 5.13 | East Ham (LIS) | F64 | 5.14 | Ealing Common | Q58 | 5.16 | Northfields | F76 | 5.20 | Ealing Common | F71 | 5.20 | Northfields | Q21 | 5.21 | Acton Town Yard | H67 | 5.25 | Barking | H41 | 5.26 | Triangle Sidings | H51 | 5.30 | Parsons Green | Q47 | 5.31 | East Ham (LIS) | R57 | 5.31 | Ealing Common | Q45 | 5.35 | Parsons Green | Q46 | 5.37 | Cromwell Depot | Q77 | 5.40 | Ealing Common | Q29 | 5.42 | Barking | Q69 | 5.42 | Triangle Sidings | Q61 | 5.47 | Upminster | R24 | 5.47 | East Ham (LIS) | R73 | 5.47 | Ealing Common | Q5 | 5.50 | Ealing Common | G99 | 5.52 | Ealing Common | Q12 | 5.53 | East Ham (LIS) | Q50 | 5.54 | Upminster | Q35 | 5.55 | Ealing Common | Q15 | 6.00 | Ealing Common | R48 | 6.00 | East Ham (LIS) | F68 | 6.02 | Ealing Broadway | H60 | 6.08 | Cromwell Depot | F63 | 6.11 | Northfields | Q33 | 6.11 | Dagenham E | Q14 | 6.12 | Whitechapel | R31 | 6.16 | Ealing Common | H55 | 6.17 | Parsons Green | R18 | 6.20 | Cromwell Depot | H62 | 6.24 | Northfields | Q42 | 6.24 | Cromwell Depot | H20 | 6.25 | East Ham (LIS) | Q11 | 6.26 | Ealing Common | F22 | 6.27 | Upminster | Q26 | 6.27 | East Ham (LIS) | H16 | 6.29 | Ealing Common | Q79 | 6.30 | Dagenham E | Q3 | 6.32 | Upminster | F9 | 6.33 | East Ham (LIS) | R80 | 6.34 | Northfields | F10 | 6.35 | Upminster | H72 | 6.37 | Barking | Q36 | 6.37 | Ealing Common | H2 | 6.38 | Northfields | R74 | 6.40 | East Ham (LIS) | Q59 | 6.43 | Upminster | F8 | 6.47 | Upminster | Q7 | 6.50 | Triangle Sidings | Q32 | 6.55 | East Ham (LIS) | Q49 | 6.56 | Parsons Green | H25 | 6.57 | Plaistow (Bay Road) | H54 | 6.57 | Triangle Sidings | H65 | 7.02 | Parsons Green | Q30 | 7.04 | Cromwell Depot | Q75 | 7.04 | Triangle Sidings | H17 | 7.12 | Northfields | H53 | 7.12 | Parsons Green | Q13 | 7.15 | Cromwell Depot | Q44 | 7.15 | East Ham (LIS) | Q27 | 7.17 | Upminster | Q6 | 7.20 | Upminster | Q78 | 7.21 | East Ham (LIS) | H40 | 7.23 | Ealing Broadway | F4 | 7.29 | Upminster | Q1 | 7.35 | Northfields
Which I feel poses more questions than answers - it certainly isn't as easy to spot as the current 'incremental numbering within starting depot by time' trend; there is probably an arcane relationship with the diagrams the stock work - it eludes me currently - I will return to the subject sometime. However, as part of the analysis - and if anyone's interested herewith the workings of Q28: Line: | D&P | WTT No: | 63 | Date: | June '50 | | Set/Unit: | Q28 | | | | | | Start: | 3.55am | HmSdg | Staff | Finish: | 4.30am | ECmnDt | | | | | | | | Start: | 7.13am | ECmnDt | | | | | | 7.15am | ATwn | 6 | | 7.29am | ECtSdg | | 7.35½ | ECtSdg | 6 | | 7.52 | Wim | | 8.50 | Wim | 6 | | 8.39½ | MHse | | 8.51 | MHse | 6 | | 9.26 | Rmd | | 9.40 | Rmd | 6 | | 10.14½ | MHse | Y | 10.20 | MHse | 6 | | 10.54 | Rmd | Y | 11.06 | Rmd | 6 | | 12.26pm | Up | | 12.35pm | Up | 6 | | 1.57 | EBdwy | | 2.10 | EBdwy | 6 | | 2.45 | MHse | | 3.35 | Rmd | 6 | | 5.01 | Up | | 5.11 | Up | 6 | | 6.47½ | HWest | | 7.16½ | ATwn | 6 | Finish: | 7.19 | ECmnDt
I ended up writing out Q28, because in the error-checking for the production of the starts/finishes there was a transcription error. Turns out that this set had quite an unusual day, starting off with a Staff train from Hammersmith siding to Acton Town, then stabling in Ealing Common depot. Coming off depot again it went to Earls Court, reversed and went EB to Wimbledon, Wimbledon - Mansion House, Mansion House - Richmond - Mansion House - Richmond, Richmond - Upminster, Upminster - Ealing Broadway - Ealing Broadway, Ealing Broadway - Mansion House - Richmond - Upminster, Upminster - Hounslow West - Acton Town and finishing at Ealing Common Depot 7.19pm. Y is the non-stop code for Barons Court. I've also dug out the corresponding Met No1/No 2 section WTT (127/126; 5/6/50) so I'll mull over that in the next few days; but not this afternoon as I'm ringing for a wedding and then off for the 38TS tour with AI. ;D

This is excellent stuff MRFS and nice formatting from AI. One thing to bear in mind from your last list is that the stock which was Q28 and went into EC Dt at 4.30am might not have been used for the Q28 07.13 departure. It could easily have been a different train. This was normal practice for midday stablers. For example, the three F Stock "Lunch" stablers you list at East Ham did not necessarily have to be the same ones doing the three afternoon departures. When I worked at Upminster, it was common to choose units needing lifting to go on pm starters which ended up at Ealing Common, as the lifting capacity at Upminster was very small.

Tangentially related to the cross-"lunch" stablers, I've got a set working book, which has a 'lunch' stabler, a renumber and lengthening. I don't think it is reflected in the WTT *wanders off into library* Bah! It's a set working book that I haven't got the WTT for: 73/74 which came in and was revised/reprinted on 30/1/56. It was a three-way renumber. However, as it is 1955 it is probably best left until later on in the series. EDIT: Having read through it in some detail last night in attempting to square the numbering to the diagrams, it is perhaps more germane to this than I originally thought. I'll do some scanning later.

And now for something related but different. Following on from the start times/numbering queries, I offer the following selection of images, from the Set Working book for WTTs 73 (Mon-Fri; Sat) and 74 (Sundays) - I've not got either of these WTTs to hand, so I don't know the reason for the reissue of the book in January 1956. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is something to do with the renumbering of sets 34, 38 and 45 (pp 7 and 9). Please feel free to look at the images and see if you can come up with a rationale for the numbering - I'm a bit busy with other things needing drawing and scanning to really deleve into an analysis; but this might help anyone who is interested. Title page, Notes page; Mondays - Fridays[/b] pp2/3 Sets 1-13, pp4/5 MF Sets 14-25, pp6/7 Sets 25-36, pp8/9 Sets 36-46, pp10/11 Sets 46-53, pp 12/13 Sets 54-61, pp 14/15 Sets 62-72, pp 16/17 Sets 73-81; Saturdays pp 18/19 Sets 1-14, pp 20/21 Sets 14-23, pp 22/23 Sets 24-36, pp 24/25 Sets 27-49, pp 26/27 Sets 50 - 57, pp 28/29 Sets 57-67, pp 30/31 Sets 67-79, pp 32/33 Set 80; Sundays pp 32/33 Sets 1-6, pp 34/35 Sets 6-16, pp 36/37 Sets 16-24, pp 38/39 Sets 24-28 and District Sunday Circle Sets 60 and 70 ; South Acton Shuttle (all week). Also available as a .pdf if you ask by PM. As you can see, the information is presented in a slightly different manner to the Rolling Stock Working sheets. There are a lot of outstanding questions in this, and I honestly suspect that the order of the numbering related to what manila folder the timetable office were using for each depot, later set working books are far more rigidly arranged around the start time. I suppose that it would be worth commenting that the set numbers were not at this time constrained by Programme Machines, which played merry wotsit with a 'sensible' numbering order - gaps above 77, 177, 277 and nothing after 377. If anyone can fathom out a reasoning, please let me know!

A thought...
When were set/train numbers introduced on the District? - with electrification in 1905? Had the the timetable been rewritten 'from scratch' subsequently (or even previously), or had it just evolved (with greater or lesser changes) over the years? And if the latter, had the set numbering scheme just evolved with it - so what had started with a nice logical arrangement just been amended into chaos?

Set numbers were certainly in use on the Met. pre-electrification, immediately post electrification there were a selection of set numbers: Exx for ordinary electric trains, Fxx for Local trains, and then Axx, Bxx, Cxx for the classes of other trains.
However, I've seen a WTT for the opening of the Ealing and South Harrow and the units were not numbered, and any alteration in working was referenced to the train time eg. 'on weekdays all trains shall be formed of 2 cars, except on Saturdays, when (commencing with the 12.0 and 12.30 trips from South Harrow) they will be formed of 4 cars.
I think set numbering came in sometime between 1903 and 1908, and was certainly in place by June 1908. One for TP to answer really, I suspect numbering was needed after the introduction of uncoupling.

Set numbers were in use on the District for the early main line electric timetables in 1905. Trains were numbered from E1 upwards. The E was dropped by the end of the year when steam was finished. I can't be sure if they were introduced for the Hounslow - S Acton service introduced in the April but I am pretty sure that they were. I will make it my business to look next time I am at the archive.
The early WTTs show train numbers were allocated to services. It is easiest to look at Sundays, as they have less numbers to deal with. In the Nov 1905 Sunday WTT, trains 1-3 were allocated to the Harrow shuttle, 4-6 to the Hounslow-S Acton shuttle the next numbers to the Putney shuttle etc. The earliest train to leave the depot got the first number in the series, so Train 4 was the first of the 1-6 sequence to leave Ealing Common as it was to form the first Hounslow shuttle, followed quickly by train 1, the first to form the Harrow shuttle. The two staff trains were not numbered.
