I noticed the other day at Upminster, at the platform edge of platform 1, approx half way down the platform there is an opening from alongside the track that goes down under the platform. Next to it in white paint is wrote 'Underground Tunnel' ...
Does anyone know where this tunnel goes? And what purpose it serves?

Yes. In the early days of steam it linked platform 1 with platform 2. The entrance to the station before the District Line reached Upminster was via the buildings on the south side. Passengers to Southend and those returning from London would have used this tunnel. It has now been replaced by the foot bridges.
