I'll go for Hampstead too, I think the round thing might well be something to do with a (possibly) 600v shore supply; but I'd have to think a bit further about it!

Unfortunately I can't help with the identity or purpose of the object - I was hoping that some knowledgeable person would see the quiz picture and say "this is a XYZ"!

Unfortunately I can't help with the identity or purpose of the object - I was hoping that some knowledgeable person would see the quiz picture and say "this is a XYZ"! I haven't had time to look in at the quiz for the last few days but I am that knowledgeable person! The large enclosure is a W&Q MDF, that is a Wiltshire & Quick enclosure with a communications Main Distribution Frame (a place where circuits are cross connected) housed within. The round object is a telephone system 2Mbit PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) Regenerator housing with a 50 pair cable tail connecting it to the MDF. The regenerator is part of the telephone transmission system between Embankment and Baker Street main telephone exchanges and Golders Green satellite telephone exchange and handles multiplexed telephone calls and UTS (Underground Ticketting System) data. Most of the main telephone network uses 34Mb and higher fibre optic transmission but the smaller outlying telephone exchanges still use 2Mbit, a 2Mb system carries 30 telephone or data channels and the regenerator in the picture can house up to ten 2Mbit PCM systems. The 2Mb regenerators are to be seen all over the combine but are more usually noticed trackside bolted on the side of the green signal type kiosks which are also MDFs.
