At this link homepage.ntlworld.com/clive.billson/tubemaps/1914.html is a 1914 map of the underground which shows the central line being extended toward's Gunnersbury. This is the first time I've seen that this extension mentioned. Any ideas why this didn't happen? (Apart from the on-set of WW1!) and why wasn't continued through at the end of the war like the extension to West Ruislip? Anybody got any info on this? (The site also has a full history of the tube map and has numerous pictures of the maps so can take a bit of time to download if you have a slow connection)

The main reason was WW1. Presumably the E&SBR was constructed whilst the Richmond Branch not was because the former had a parter, the GWR, whereas the latter would have been the CLR on its own.
Stations on the branch were to have been at Hammersmith Grove, Paddenswick Road, Rylett Road, Stamford Gardens, Turnham Green MDR, and Heathfield Terrace. Theyre all very close together though. Even more recently it was proposed (past 30 years) to help relieve the District of the Richmond Branch.
The Greenford - West Ruislip Branch wasn't concurrent with the (first) Richmond proposal.

Interestingly the idea of extending the Central Line to Richmond resurfaced in a 1988 article in the Daily Telegraph: Ticket to a 21st Century Tube (1.2MB)

When was the curve from Gunnersbury to Kew Bridge taken out? The District or Piccadilly to Hounslow, Feltham or Heathrow via Brentford would have been interesting.
