During the rush hour I sometimes get an Amersham semi- fast from Baker St. which gets me back to Pinner in rapid time. It's always a pleasure to whizz past Wembley Pk,Preston Road and Northwick Park to Harrow. However I have always been mystified as to their timetable slots. Looking at the Met Line timetables on Tfl makes me go cross eyed. Can somebody enlighten me-when do they run?.Is it a regular service or just an 'as and when'?.Do they run to/from Aldgate.? Likewise for the reverse journey in to Baker St. Thanks

On weekdays Ammy fasts are every 17min morning and evening busy; though that figure contains two Amersham trains diverted from Chesham (morning busy) and to Chesham (afternoon busy); lunchtime slack the frequency is 10-20 min and in the evening slack the frequency is half-hourly. Others more familiar with the Met (I don't often use it, just got lots of timetables) will be able to give you the other details in a bit more digestible form - I'd probably only bore you with the pattern and the pattern stabilisers.

Off the top of my head there are only two semi-fast Amersham services in the whole timetable. They are T413 15:30½ ex Baker Street and T472 17:37½ ex Baker Street. The latter is overtaken by 1B52 (17:48 ex Marylebone) while between Harrow and Moor Park but I can't see any obvious reason why the former calls all stations from Harrow.

The 1530½ ex Baker Street has been shewn as trip 11 of T413 since WTT 317 (28/9/03) and has been present in all WTTs since (I've not looked through the intervening leaf fall TTNs; although I do have them) - I wonder if it is for school traffic. The revisions paragraph in WTT 317 states all semi fast Amersham services have been withdrawn They obviously haven't quite vanished! WTT 317 saw all the Watfords becoming semi-fasts and the Uxbridges slow. 317 also saw quite a lot of changes to the service pattern; including the withdrawal of the last 'Metromail' train. However, that is a subject for another time!

The Semi-fast Amersham train at 1530 is to serve the schools along the Pinner-Rickmansworth route. There is also a train from Amersham to Baker St semi fast at the same time.
The Semi fast Amersham train in the PM peak simply provides better services to Amersham to cover the Chesham train. There used to be two in the old days....one for each Chesham!

As previously stated the afternoon Semi Fast's are provided for home bound children from school and helps avoid the problem of quite substanial numbers changing trains at Moor Park.
413 1530 Baker Street to Amersham and 410 1546 Amersham to Baker Street cover the flows and ear defenders are recomended when travelling with the little angels.
472 1737 Baker Street to Amersham merely closes the gap during the evening peak, with the following Chesham usually fairly full by Baker Street and provides relief to the Watford only 2" in front also from the City.
Educational note For those not familiar with the convention o degrees " minutes ' seconds

The Semi-fast Amersham train at 1530 is to serve the schools along the Pinner-Rickmansworth route. There is also a train from Amersham to Baker St semi fast at the same time. The latter is to provide Amersham/Ricky-Pinner/Northwood school-home journeys. I don't think there are that many people that go to school in Pinner/Northwood that live in Ricky, Chorleywood, Chalfont and Amersham. Then again, 1530 is too early for school children from Amersham (IIRC the semi-fast used to be 1550, and there was a rush by many to catch it, while other train people (as opposed to car people, coach people and walking people) went slower and hung about with the walk people around Amersham, maybe buying a snack, for a bit before getting a later train.

During the rush hour I sometimes get an Amersham semi- fast from Baker St. which gets me back to Pinner in rapid time. It's always a pleasure to whizz past Wembley Pk,Preston Road and Northwick Park to Harrow. Are you 100% it was an Amersham? There are still a few Watford Semi Fasts about: All Watfords from Train 420 (1627 ex Aldgate) are scheduled to non stop between Finchley Road and Harrow until the 1816 departure from Baker Street (T435). Then, from the 1809 ex Aldgate (T452), these 'semi fast' services also call at Wembley Park. This continues until the 1908 ex Aldgate (T426) - HOWEVER 420 (1843 ex Aldgate) and 417 (1900 ex Aldgate) stop all stations. They are not all ex Aldgate, I believe every other one starts from Baker Street. This may be altered in the event of service disruption. Also during times of disruption trains may have their stopping patterns altered.....trains becoming 'fast Uxbridge' and 'fast Watford' are not uncommon. Also where Watford trains are cancelled Amersham services are diverted via the local calling all stations to make up for it. There is a chance that some of the trains you mention travelling on could have had their pattern altered by the controller (or signaller, having ok'd it by the controller ).

I'm suprised the Uxbridge Semis have gone. thought there was one each peak in the peak direction. No they're contra peak direction, northbound in the morning peak (08:15 Baker St to Uxbridge) and southbound in the evening peak (17:30 Uxbridge to Aldgate). There is one other early morning south bound semi fast service from the Uxbridge Branch but it runs direct from Uxbridge Sidings (entering service at Hillingdon at 05:57) and is also scheduled to sit at Harrow for about five minutes so that all benefit of a semi fast service is lost.

There were, from memory, 3 semi-fast Uxbridges during yesterday evening's peak. That's not to say there will be more or less this evening.
There are also occasional all-stations Watfords.
It all depends how the service is running. A semi-fast Uxbridge is ideal to pick up the odd few minutes, and an easy way to get a train running out of timetable order back into timetable order.
The all-stations Watford is another way to put trains back into order (although the time saving is not made on the northbound).

I've moaned about the PM Watford timetable and sometimes the starters from Baker Street that end up right up behind a late running ex-Aldgate train are made semi-fast.
There is also a late evening train from Watford to Baker Street semi-fast.

Perhaps when the Croxley Link goes ahead we may see a connection from the fast to Watford north or Moor Park? An highly flexible service would be possible to offer then.

The value of the Croxley link would be to move the northern terminus to a major employment, shopping and entertainment destination. I can't see much point in skipping the sources of that traffic.

Can't see a real (albeit theoretical) reason for not alternating stoppers/semi-fasts if Ben's suggestion goes ahead - regulating the service might be a bit more entertaining - it would all come down to that phrase 'service robustness', I suppose.

Were there ever any school specials on the Uxbridge branch?

In the old timetable Watford trains alternated semi-fast/local. The service was not so robust although the S/F trains did go to Aldgate! I doubt a connection with the fast line would be made, it would be a lot of work and space is tight.
I don't know of any school services on the Uxbridge Branch, the school trains provide a direct train between Northwood-Rickmansworth without a need to change. There isn't that problem on the Uxbridge Branch. In pre-A stock days, F stock trains used to travel to Watford in school hours.

Putting a schools semi-fast to/from Rickmansworth will also mean those traveling to/from Croxley and Watford Met can get a cross-platform interchange at Moor Park, again reducing loading on the subway.

WTT = Working Time Table Intended for staff use only these show the full detail of the service including train identities, empty stock moves etc and thus contain far more detail than any timetables issued/displayed to the public.

Due to a points problem at Harrow North Junction this afternoon the 1530 Ex-Baker St to Amersham semi fast had to become a fast train being diverted into plat 1 at Harrow. I had to change!

On 24th April the 9.08 from Pinner townbound was fast between Harrow on the Hill and Finchley Rd. Is this a scheduled service or was it a catch- up due to some of the ''minor delays'' that occured earlier?
