I first regularly travelled on the District in September 1968 when I travelled between Barking and Mile End to school. I remember that some of the trains were quite elderly with celestory roofs and straight sided doors that did not seem to be entirely lined up with their, presumably, worn out rollers.
Any ideas what these may have been anybody?
I also recall that it was considered somehow beneath our dignity to ride in such obviously clapped out antiques and that we would wait for a more modern outline train to continue our journey.
Before long we discovered the relatively remote platform 3 for the empty metropolitan line train for even more comfort.

Q stock. Specifically, they could have been Q23 cars.
You should do a search in the Historical forum for postings on the Q stock; you'll find all the info you need there.

The old District stock was what we called Q Stock. The oldest vehicles dated back to 1923. They were withdrawn in 1971.
The Metropolitan stock was CO/CP Stock which lasted until 1981.
