Hi all.
Firstly I hope this is the right place for a model train question.
You probably dont know that I have an extensive collection of Hornby and Bachmann model trains. Anyway, I was in the LU Museum on Monday, and I decided just to go in the upstairs part of the shop. I saw in the cabinet they had the Bachmann Class 170 in 'one' livery. The thing I noticed was on the front - it did not have the cosmetic couplings, but instead, Kadee couplings. This interested me, as it was the first Bachmann unit I had ever seen with the kadee couplings, and I really like kadee's. I am thinking of buying it, however, I have 2 questions. 1) Are the couplings cosmetic or real? 2) Can they be replaced?
Thanks a lot. Uzair

Uzair Without seeing it, it's hard to say, but Kadee generally only make couplers that work - check out their website for more info: www.kadee.com/

I have a class 168 at home and that is basically the same model which a different paint job! The couplings on that aren't real but they could be replaced by a kadee. This wouldn't be a very easy job however!

Metman, I also have a Class 168 and I tried to replace the original one with a kadee but so far I have failed lol.
I probably should go to my nearest model shop to get a better look at the 170.

I have three Bachmann 170s. They don't have real couplings on the ends, but they are older than the 'one' model. I've just looked on the internet for photos of the 'one' Class 170, and I can't tell if they have put a working coupler on it or not, but something looks different.

Ive got the three car 170/2 in One livery. The coulpers don't work on mine as they don't actually come past the body of the unit. Unless you rip them out (the coupler is glued in) and replace them they will never work. The internal one work fine tho :-)
Hope that helps.

Sounds about right. Good luck with a kadee, there is not a lot of room to move it around because of the front skirt some trains have.
