In the C5 prog 'Ghosts on the Underground' shown last week, mention was made of rumours passed down to staff over the years. One was of a tunnel leading from Whitechapel to the (Royal) London Hospital in the early-1900s used for 'dead body trains'. Having worked on the District, i know not of any such tunnel (although it could be on the ELL)and have never heard of this or anything remotely like it, but even so sounds like a rumour (along the lines of the third tunnel mouth at Golders leads to Buck House etc). Can anyone elaborate or shed light?

The tunnel they were referring to at Whitechapel is next to 25rd and it is opposite the train maintainers office on the westbound platform, of course it is all bricked up but above where the tunnel was is now a part of the Permanent Way department, this is the place where all the windows are left open and all the lights are turned on.
The reason I know this is from a GSM of old who pointed it out to me who had a fascination of old running tunnels or old walkways, and some of the stories he told me sent a shiver down my spine.

Many years ago when the morgue was full at the London Hospital, some spare rooms under the ticket hall area were used as a temporary morgue.

when i was based at whitechpel a few years ago the supervisor took me round the station and theres a passage with a ramp which leads to a bricked up wall which beyond there is the passage way to the royal london
