Why are there whistle boards just outside Bow Road?

I believe they are so situated to provide advance warning to track workers unable to see (with adequate warning) the approaching trains because of the blind bend round the sub station.
There is also no cess and limited clearance in that area.
Eastbound 1/2 way up bow bank and westbound just before the Iron Bridge over the DLR after leaving Bromley-By-Bow

That might be the historical reason, but I was taught, if you can't get the required sighting you shouldn't be there.

True Tom, which thus puzzles me about why many of the Whistle boards that exist, still do so ? May help a driver thinking of climbing out of his / her cab avoid an oncoming train ? In practise the compliance with the boards by drivers seems erratic ! hmmmmmmm NR recently installed one on the approach to Richmond and NR ones apply 24/7 !
