I noticed yesterday, for the first time in well over a year ...The Light box destination indicator (and next train platform arrow) at Whitechapel westbound was actually working !!!! Now this indicator and the one at Aldgate East seems to be huge Are there really lots of odd destinations hiding behind that mass of black ? In theory I assume various H & C destinations and because of the reversing available at both, eastbound destinations, are there ...but are they On Sunday morning I worked one of the scheduled Aldgate East reversers, that in consequence runs to Upminster from the westbound platform at Aldgate East ...but the indicator box remained blank (However the Dot matrix Indicators at West Ham, Mile End and Stepney Green did display correctly "ALDGATE EAST only" whilst none of the rest out east now seem to work ! )

JAMES'S PARK SOUTH KENSINGTON EARL'S COURT OLYMPIA WEST KENSINGTON HAMMERSMITH (DR) GUNNERSBURY RICHMOND ACTON TOWN EALING COMMON EALING BROADWAY NORTHFIELDS HOUNSLOW CENTRAL HOUNSLOW WEST WEMBLEY PARK HARROW ON THE HILL

In theory I assume various H & C destinations and because of the reversing available at both, eastbound destinations, are there ...but are they According to a few moments research it seems that the WB platform train describer at Aldgate East can theoretiocally display the following destinations (I should imagine the one at Whitechapel would be the same) Special Stops Here Putney Bridge Northfields Parsons Green Acton Town Hammersmith via Kings Cross Wimbledon Hounslow Richmond Ealing Broadway Baker Street In addition it could also display the following Not Stopping at West Brompton Not Stopping at Ravenscourt Park & Stamford Brook Not Stopping at West Kensington & Barons Court Not Stopping at South Kensington & Gloucester Road No eastbound destinations can be displayed on the WB describer at Aldgate East, and since the computer which these days controls this describer will be regarding any train reversing west to east as an eastbound train (with appropriate TD) almost before the train is at a stand in the platform it is very unlikely that 'STOPS HERE' will be displayed either.

After my misadventure on another thread with a reference to an "odd train", I ought to know better (but I don't ) - I remember the first time I saw a train indicator (at Earl's Court IIRC) showing STOPS HERE I thought, of course it does, they all do...

Having read this thread and having it in mind whilst at work last night - I noticed (having not really studied it before) that the Westbound board at Cannon Street is rather large too.

As a matter of curiosity, does this view show the wrong -road starter? I take it that the #-over is East of the station then? Excuse my ignorance please. www.urban75.org/vista/aldgate.html

Excuse my ignorance please. www.urban75.org/vista/aldgate.htmlNo. The signals you can see are at the west end of the station. The one between the tracks is OB45, the junction signal for the routes to either Tower Hill or Liverpool St. Beyond it on the wall is a Fixed Red Light provided to remind drivers of trains reversing east to west that they must shunt forward into the tunnel before changing ends as the crossover is indeed east of the station.

Cheers Harsig! You also answered my subsidiary, not asked, about the option of reversing E-W a la Liverpool Street. You might be interested to see this photo: www.nostalgiaroad.co.uk/causeway2.jpgE774 is on the Down line which is in fact reversible, between Redbridge Junction and Totton, on the Redbridge Causeway over the River Test. It has a fixed red, but has a GSL adjacent that authorises moves as indicated by the three illuminated boxes. www.railforums.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=113&d=1156520846On Totton Up platform there is a usual starter, but no fixed red for trains reversing back Up to Down, usually to go back down the Fawley Branch. There is instead a "REVERSIBLE LINE" notice and a "LIMIT OF SHUNT" board. Is the latter used on the LU or is it always a fixed red/trainstop?

Harsig ... your a star !
Thanks for that detailed list ... been puzzled a long long time over that !
(Now I wish I'd actually noticed the board and arrow today at Whitechapel to see what it was showing ....as my train was run round the H&C train that had been in front of me on the westbound there ;D ;D ;D ;D )
I have another question variation on this theme asked in a seperate thread "Destination Colours"

I am so out of touch with the LU so here's a question: what other light boxes are there still, such as those that used to be at Hammersmith D & P, especially with "HOUNSLOW"? Please.

Baron's Court w/b can probably show Hounslow on both roads.
Acton Town w/b can probably still show Hounslow too, especially since "HOUNSLOW" is most likely used for Hounslow Central (WT).
Can Tower Hill w/b show Hounslow? Or any of the lightboxes that may remain east of Whitechapel?

whitechapel does not show a hounslow some dot matrix signs on the westbound from monumnet show northfields there is still t/d's which are able to show wimbledon - non stop and ealing - non stop but if these do come down the line because of a fault then the dot matrix sign shows a blank it would look like this
1 *************** 1min 2 Richmond 3mins 3 Ealing Broadway 4mins
(proboards dont let you put blanks in)
its like not to confuse the computers at baker st when a circle line train is brought into service at barking on the westbound it is usually sent with a putney bridge description to let it know it is a circle line via victoria and not via liverpool st, i had it working last week but was only able to put up a parsons green, wimbledon, and richmond description. when i am back to work on monday night i will find from the prints what that sign on the westbound can actually show

Can I please get put out of my misery? Can anyone remember what the EB and WB Hammersmith boxes could describe? I seem to recall that Picc WB had "HOUNSLOW" or "HOUNSLOW WEST" and then became "HATTON CROSS"...but was there still "HOUNSLOW" or "H/W" on the District WB? On the EB District did it say just "PICCADILLY LINE" as against all Picc destinations..plus "STOPS HERE"?
