What are the mighty A stock doing at West Ruislip? Resting due to the engineering works on the Uxbridge branch?

The signalling works at Uxbridge this weekend requires the sidings there to be clear of trains.

Yeah why not.......
........the blinds look better, even with the small print 'Sorry not in service' on them!
Oh, and the A stock aren't covered in tape!

The blinds are much clearer. But the LEDs are progress!

i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm67/astock5000/Buses/DSCF0057.jpgIf LED displays are big enough, like the one on this bus, they are better than blinds, but small ones are much harder to see, and you can't fit a big display on the front of tube stock, so buses should have LED displays, and trains should use blinds (although the displays on DLR trains are quite clear, so maybe the 92TS could have better LED displays).

I personally prefer Destination Blinds, not wholely beacause I'm in possession of far to many. The thought of my Routemaster having LED's urghhh!
The LED's on the 92 TS when they work are servicable, but the depots fail to maintain them thus the glazing is cracked and filthy. Maybe I better carrry my 62TS Central line blinds with me in the future??

Destination blinds aren't practical on modern or refurbished stock. The 95s, 96s and D stocks destinations are shown on both ends of the train and is tied into the DVA and internal displays, this isn't possible with roller blinds.

Halton Transport Busses around here have blinds that are motored. The drivers punch a code into a console and the appropriate destination is displayed. Admittedly yes an LED display has fewer limits on the number of destinations it can display than a blind, but would that matter in this circumstance?

I would imagine motorised blinds are more failure prone than LEDs, (the DLR got rid of them a few years back) on a six car train you will have at least one inside each car and one on each end of the train, lot's there to go wrong.

Perhaps in the future cost will allow plasma/LCD screens for the blinds. That will deffinitely provide the best of both worlds.

The lettering on D Stock destination LEDs is smaller than that on the roller blinds they replaced so are less visible to those with partial-sight, yet no doubt LU 'spin' would argue they are an improvement (because everything new always is better, even if it means less seats, more people standing etc). The advantage is that rear screens can be changed en-route now, something which hadn't been possible after the demise of Guards. Pity that technology hadn't developed far enough when the C Stock were refurbed, given the future Circle Line changes.

But the blinds at the back can be changed, the driver can do it before changing ends!

But the blinds will need changing more frequently than the driver changes ends. From Hammersmith the destination need to point to a destination somewhere between Baker Street and Aldgate, from Edgware Road the destination needs be to be Circle Line, from South or High Street Kensington it needs to say Edgware Road. It can't just say "Circle Line" as at Edgware Road a train saying "Circle Line" could be going to Hammersmith direct, Hammersmith via Tower Hill and Edgware Raod or Edgware Road via Tower Hill. And this is excluding all the times the train gets diverted or curtailed.

They'll probably just leave Hammersmith showing 'Edgware Road', which they'll get to, eventually...

I've seen pictures of the A stock alongside 92s on EBay. I wonder if the setting for these pics was Ruislip depot?

Not yet it isn't! I was on 5112-5113 the other day. Those trains were in store during the engineering works on the Uxbridge branch.

With S stock not arriving till next Sept the A stock fleet should remain intact till then.

With S stock not arriving till next Sept the A stock fleet should remain intact till then. And it is possible no more A stock will go unitl 2011. As the S stock are being built by Bombardier, there will probably be a big delay. The 378s were originally going to enter service last Autumn!
