I found a bobble hanger on eBay the other day - item 290299382026...well, needless to say I placed a bid and eventually won the item. It arrived the other day and I've been trying to decide the type of train it would have been removed from ever since - obviously it's from some kind of Surface Stock, but I don't know which type - I'm thinking it may be from a CO/CP car, but can anyone confirm/deny this?

How many types were there? And were there "surface" and "tube" ones? Reason I ask is I have one I'm sure came from 59ts,and I seem to remember the 38ts having them too. I also seem to recall the Standard Stock having leather straps..... Who can set us straight?

I think quite a variety of different hangers were used over the years - the seller whom I bought that one off is also selling one from a Standard Stock car: 290301220525 (I'm not going to bid on this one so if anyone else wants it, help yourself! ). The hangers used for Tube stock were shorter than the Surface stock hangers due to the lower ceiling but even so, the designs are similar. I also have a bobble hanger from (believed to be) a 1959 Stock car (http://tinyurl.com/b7nx63) and also now have one from a 1938 Stock car - the only real differences I can see are that the latter has a green fixing bracket, brass top, rusty spring and an internal chain, rather than a tension wire.

It could be from a recent D78 Stock refurbishment...

It could be from a recent D78 Stock refurbishment... My thoughts too - but not utterly sure.

It could be from a recent D78 Stock refurbishment... It certainly isn't from a D78 ! The D78 had the actual grip part of the strap hanger in brown and in a more rounded shape. Plus the column was white (in two different lengths). It has a most unusual fixing arrangement at the top and from it's length I'd agree it is from surface stock. The shape of the grip is certainly consistent with those fitted to 1938 era stock ... but other than saying it is an old artifact I wouldn't like to say from what !
