Does anyone remember when the Underground stopped running on Christmas Day?
I remember working Xmas Day 1971 (nights, subject of a long story one day which Bigal can back up), and Xmas Day 1972, working from PG to Upminster and back, 1 trip.
The DR was only running a limited service, Putney Bridge-Upminster to about 1400, then Putney Bridge- Whitechapel till gone midnight. IIRC there were some trains to Acton town and Ealing Broadway, but again only till about 1400.
I've just found the Xmas 1972 WTT, so will have a look through and see what I can find. Most of the stations were shut anyway, but the few punters who did travel were quite happy to know we were running.
We got double time and a day in lieu; in fact the one trip was 4 hours, so that equated to double time!

Sometime around 1978 I think, but I'm sure someone else will come up with the date for certain.

1979 was the last Christmas worked. I suspect that won't be the last ever!

We'll see about that! ;D ;D LOL - think it's inevitable. We are one of the only world cities not to have a transport system on Xmas day.
