I've always found the use of cloth seats on the LU not practical for cleaning.I've never seen them on other urban transit systems in Europe or USA(LIRR for instance). In fact they always feel and look grubby, unhygienic and worn. This country seems to have a love affair with cloth or carpets in high use public areas eg Heathrow dreaded T1,or carpet in toilets in houses ugh.
My question is are these seats ever cleaned, brushed, vacuumed or wet cleaned, and come to that apart from litter picking what is the cleaning routine for the carriages? The areas around windows always look in need of a good deep clean as well. There is always black sooty greasy crud in the nooks and crannies. Look forward to your replies and explanations.

On a daily bases trains aren't hoovered, they are merely swept(seats and floors) and floors mopped. If a spillage is found on a seat it is simply wiped off. The depots do have vaccume cleaners, but in 25 years I've never seen one used.

I wish they'd clean the trains on the outside and paint them-some of them look aweful, and its not just the Met either! Call me cynical but I think they are left like that so the new trains are welcomed better!

The chances of the A60s getting re-painted are virtually zero as their days are now numbered.

The chances of the A60s getting re-painted are virtually zero as their days are now numbered. In conversation with a colleague the other week, after seeing a few tatty ones on the CCTV, we pondered why just a few tins of red paint couldn't be purchased - even from a bargain basement shop - just to tidy the fronts of the A60s up. As for the seats, they are properly cleaned / swapped on a regular basis - though how regular I am not sure. I certainly wouldn't eat my dinner of them ;D

Amazing how LU feels trains in this condition are acceptable but woe betide if an SA is on the gateline without a name badge...

Well exactly! It does take the mick when you've got trains running around looking a mess. I thought there were penalities for the infacos if trains were not maintained properly? That may not extend to image of course!

That may not extend to image of course! The infracos definitly get penalised if the trains go around covered in graffiti. I doubt they get done if the paint is peeling off mainly due to the chemicals they use to clean off the graffiti. We were told originally when they started painting the bare aluminum trains that that the paint was graffiti resistant, time has prooved that claim wrong.

I believe the A stock fleet trialled a new high gloss paint that graffiti could be removed easily, so the scum decided to scratch and acid etch their way on!

mostly the dirty seats, are just removed, one news fitted, and the old ones sent to acton. Just one news fitted? Is it a broadsheet or tabloid? I'm sure those Chesham residents would love to sit on a copy of the Daily Star ;D

We seem to have strayed off the thread here. I wouldn't say we have to be honest. The thread concerns carriage cleaning, and if that is to encompass the little yobs (to put it politely) being evicted from our trains, then it follows the theme of the thread ;D

Amersham, Little Chalfont, Chorleywood and Moor Park are far snootier I know, I know, but the letter writers of the "snootier" surrounding area are the ones I am referring to. Mr and Mrs Chav (as if they'd be married ) are unlikely (or possibly able) to put pen to paper to complain about the pullmans being 4 and a half minutes late.

To think i sleep on them seats I've seen all sorts of things on those seats, which no doubt leaves various odours imbedded into the seats. No way would I be sleeping on those.

I took her to Paris for our first anniversary! Kind of went down hill from there...I mean how can you keep that up! It's nearly 5 years now. I think she quite enjoyed it actually- mind you anything is better than listening to me moan about how slow and boring the Northern Line is!

A going over with a hoover wouldn't go amiss! I don't think I've ever seen a hoover or any sort of cleaning device anywhere near the seats on an A60. When we used to make up a bed on them (before seats were locked down and tagged you could make a bed that was almost double size) you were always careful not to bang them around too much due to the levels of dust that came out of them.

Northumberland Park depot on the Victoria Line is equipped with 4 very well equipped cleaning roads (constructed about 6 or 7 years ago) with many piped hot and cold water hozes and massive vacuum pipes all hung from overhead trunking. After the peak 4 trains would stable here which would be throughly cleaned. All the seats were vacuumed and the floors and surfaces washed down with added (lemon) detergent. A team of cleaners with cloths would polish and buff and then dry the trains ... the floors would sometimes have several inches of water on them during this process and was not always completely dry by the time the train went out in the evening peak! 4 more trains would be done overnight and more at weekends. I assume this still occurs.
A simmilar massive wash shed has been constructed in Upminster (District Line) depot for two trains, though seems to have been slow coming into regular use. Deep cleaning being undertaken by more traditional methods at Ealing Common depot. However there were two D stock in the cleaning sheds on Friday night, so perhaps this is now coming on stream.
We had a spell of cleaners polishing interior glass draught screens whilst trains were standing in Upminster platform, though I haven't seen that for the last few weeks.
