I'd like some advice about how I should go about photographing on railway stations (both LU and National Rail) without getting harassed or arrested under a "Section 44"

Chris W has provided a very comprehensive guide here - in essence though, you're best bet is to seek out the station supervisor and advise them of what you are doing; by approaching the station staff first, you well save any potential hassle later on. Other basics are: - Stay in public areas at all times
- Don't use a flash
- Don't use a Tripod
- Obey station staff's instructions - if they ask you to move on, don't get into an argument. Simply go elsewhere or go back another day.

Since we are talking about amatuer activity, and not that which comes under the £30 "student Photographic/Filming Permit", someone should initiate a "test case" by writing to LU asking if they're allowed under the bye-laws, conditions of carriage etc, to take enthusiast pix. If the reply is "yes", subject to sensible security/safety do's & don'ts; then it would be worth carrying this around. I'm quite sure simply asking a local S/S may well result in a "sorry, that's banned" response, or that you must apply for a film dept permit etc. I visited Blackfriars this week and the S/S couldn't have been more helpful but even he had encountered problems when taking some last week photos as a passenger objected to being in shot!

Oddly you can use a tripod at a S/S's discretion if you pay £30 for permit as it apparently isn't a hazard in these circumstasnces. Amazing thing, the power of money!
