Hi
I've noticed that Wimbledon station is closed to all but Thameslink and Tramlink over Easter and for some weekends either side. The District Line will apparently not be running between Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon. Does anyone know what is so big a job that it needs such a total closure? And will the District really be reversing at Wimbledon Park? It might happen quite often but I've never seen it!
Thanks

Yes it will be... not that common but not altogether rare. Its a simple-ish shunt move

Could the trains be running empty into Wimbledon after Wimbledon Park? Similar things happen on the Northern when Edgware is shut to passengers, being detrained at Burnt Oak.

No they will be de-training in the WB platform at Wimbo park, pulling up to the shunt limit (just west of the station). The driver will change ends then and when the position light shunt signal clears, they will take the train into the EB platform

Can trains show Wimbledon Park on their destination displays , or will they just show Wombledon?

I believe D stock can show any destination on the District line apart from Notting Hill Gate to Edgware Road inclusive. I don't think Wimbledon Park is on the C stock blinds but someone can probably confirm this.

If Wimbledon Park is not on C stock blinds, then probably the DVA on C stock can't say 'This is a District line train to Wimbledon Park'. What about the DMIs on the stations?

Wimbledon Park is definitely not on the C stock blinds, unless we can bodge Wembley Park! ;D I think we may be able to put it as a destination on the DVA's though.. I am going to have to have a play tomorrow now! We can scroll through all stations as to the starting station, so maybe we can do the same with destinations! Will report back if no-one else has answered it by tomorrow!

What about the DMIs on the stations? Probably not where the ABCD TDs are used to drive the system, but I'd think Wimbledon would be close enough really (especially as there will be announcements with utter abandon when it happens).

We reversed at wimbledon Park in the early 70's when Wwimbledon was re-signalled and the track layout changed. I worked the first train across the new layout on the 0420 something empties from PG to Wimbledon, then the "staff" from Wimbledon.

I definitely want to see a Wimbledon Park reverser Why does it say on the track closure for the next six months on the tube website that the District Line is suspended today between Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon and on the Live Travel News it doesnt say it

I have just looked at the six month track closure list and Wimbledon is not on there for this weekend, which is correct! EDIT: it is however listed for the 28th & 29th March - looks like you have looked at the wrong month! ;D ;D

Thanks for all the responses - very interesting. Does anyone know why practically the whole of the station is closed throughout the period of works? Is it not possible to do the SWT bits and then the LUL bits?

According to ROTR, it's "C11 Rerail Resleeper Reballast-Trax" between 5m 16ch and 7m 30ch... and "conductor rail renewal" between 7m40ch and 10m 78ch.
5m 16ch is just north of Earlsfield and 7m30ch is the London end of the UF - US points at Wimbledon West Jn.

Having just found my hoard of District Line memorabilia, Wimbledon district was resignalled with colour lights in late 1970. I thought it was later than that, but that may have been when the track layout was altered. (Damn, have left the book at work, so can't give the exact date). With that came the closure of Cromer Road, Southfields and Revelstoke Road signal boxes. I don't ever remember Revelstoke Road box being manned; there was an intermediate block signal there which was always "clear".

So prior to 1970, was it all semaphore all the way from East Putney - Wimbledon? Are there any pictures around of the old signalling?

Changing "Broadway" to "Common" SSL Stock
