Hi guys & gals,
Is it safe to delete suspected viruses from quarantine? This won't release the virus back onto my hard drive will it?
Also, what are peoples suggestions for the best (FREE) virus scanner?
I recently ditched Norton due to it finding viruses when it was time for me to renew my subscription. How coincidental...
Cheers!

I use a combination of AVG and SuperAntispyware, if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a look into those.
Ideally i'd like something that colour codes when I should be scanning my system, as I seldom do it enough.
For example, i'd like it to go orange when it's time to think of doing a scan and red when a scan is necessary. I know a program did this but cannot remember which one!

I use Avast and haven't had any problems with it.

Norton and McAfee are both programs I'd steer well clear of. They allow some terrible virus past, and are known as 'bloatware' for the amount of diskspace they take up. The best I've come across in terms of flexibility, configurability, ease of use and disk space used is called NOD32, by a company called Eset. I'd recommend it to anyone.

AVG allows you to schedule a scan so you don't have to remember to do one. Back when I was running windows regularly, I had AVG do a basic test every 24 hours and a fully comprehensive check weekly, both scheduled for the early hours of the morning so it didn't interrupt what I was doing.

Thanks for the replies.
Chris, how did you set up the basic and full checks? in my AVG it just allows me to select what has to be scanned and how frequently it will scan.
Thanks.

One thing to note, AVG is getting a reputation for being a bit leaky these days.. its a shame - it used to be the best.
Avast is highly recommended.
I currently use Avira Antivir Premium, but I think their free offering is pretty good too.

That's why I use SuperAntiSpyware too (I just run that once a month), the AVG problems seem to have ironed themselves out since early Jan... However, AVG/ASS suits me as I don't got round looking at any dodgy stuff or <ahem> 'Gentlemen's Art'. ;D

Most ISP's are doing their own these days, the Virgin one is good from personal experience.
General rules of thumb: Don't open an e-mail from someone you don't know. Ensure your browser has a pop-up blocker, and steer clear of porn, it really isn't free, and it won't half screw your system. And be VERY careful on MSN!

Nod32 does the colour thing with its icon in the bottom right, green yellow and red. Also it allows you to download a fully working trial for 30 days i think.
Spybot is quite a good anti spyware programme, and its free too.

I use Kaspersky and I swear by it, I've tried everything else and it combines all of the security with none of the communisticalness (sic) or resource hoggery.

AVG 8 user here, tho I don't think it's as good as AVG 7.5. I will recommend it to new users who use an email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc) as it has a built-in email scanner, but for users who use webmail only (hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc), I recommend AntiVir.
Hint: With AVG8, go to Tools > Advanced Settings, Schedules. For "Virus database update schedule" and "Program update schedule", make sure the boxes "Run on computer startup if task has been missed" and "Run the update again as soon as the internet connection is available". These were automatically enabled in the 7.5, but not in 8. They will ensure that AVG will truly automatically update itself whenever it can, not just when scheduled, when there's a chance your PC may be switched off!
This isn't a problem if your PC is on 24/7 like mine, but on my laptops I have to ensure these options are set otherwise AVG whinges about being out of date.
I've been hearing good things about Kaspersky although I wasn't too impressed, and NOD32 gets continually good reviews. Wasn't too impressed with that when I took over IT at a company who was using it - lots of problems, but that was an old version.
