I just had to share this with this Forum, as it shows dedication to get that elusive bay platform road, and also because I am for once speechless... One of the time consuming parts of the logistics planning was to see how many trains used the bay platform 3 at Dagenham East as I was planning a LUL grice first thing Wednesday morning, I spent ages working out ways I could do Dagenham East as well. In the end, after finalising all my plans I decided to do Dagenham East after Maidstone, which meant I could get home earlier on Wednesday.
For Information the M-F morning trains to / from Dagenham East bay platform 3 are ….
Note : (only times from Aldgate East as I didn't have time to find
origins of trains)…..

Does not appear to be a return for this one, so it may not go into
the bay but continue to Upminster ECS instead.
As I had nothing else planned now until tomorrow morning I did
several of these trains running between Dagenham East & Becontree. It started off fine with the 16:43 departure from the bay platform 3 and using the `EB' to `WB' trailing crossover and the next three trains booked to go into and return from the bay did so.
The service had started to run a bit late in places after a short
period where no trains arrived from London and it was a case of
checking the front of the train. The 17:44 Aldgate, (18:12
Becontree), or at least what I worked out should have been the
17:44, (at 18:21), had Upminster on the front so I let it go only to
find it said Dagenham East on the back. I don't think it went into the bay though as I did not see it return and the next train which was supposed to go into the bay …. the 18:37 from Becontree, (18:10 Aldgate East), did do the bay. I returned back as far as Dagenham Heathway to catch the last train that terminated at Dagenham East as I wanted to see what happened after the 19:08 arrival as it did not appear to have a return.
No more trains turned up with Dagenham East on the front, so after a while I jumped onto the next train, returned to the car and set off for North London to make camp.
Wednesday morning the 2nd August 2006 would see me get a rare bay, only booked to be done by one train a day, M-F.
After a ride on a Night Bus from Cockfosters, I arrived at
Westminster in time to catch the first train of the day, although
the important one was the sixth Eastbound, but rather than wait, I took the 05:25 to Embankment, then the 05:44 to Temple, let a Circle Line train pass, then caught the 05:57 to Blackfriars, let another Circle Line trains pass, then it was time for the sixth train … The 05:27 from Ealing Broadway / 06:00 from Westminster / 06:06 from Blackfriars, (departed a minute late), and sat in the very front of 7055+17055+8055+7505+17504+7504 to get the full thrill of the Mansion House Bay, arriving on time at 06:08.
Departure to Richmond was on time at 06:20 and I got off at
Blackfriars [P.1] a minute late at 06:22.
For completeness I thought I would do the Tower Hill Bay, which has regular reversals, even though it was not required….

A big thank you to members of Gensheet and the compilers of Baywatch whose information has proved most helpful. I hope my hours spent fighting with the LUL Journey Planner to get the details of ALL of the Dagenham East trains has helped someone else, who now doesn't need to spend hours going through lots of permutations to get the right results. I also hope my reports also help other people planning to do the same.
I assume then that Mansion House reversing is indeed just scheduled for once a day, but in practice is used to turn trains early? Many years ago in the days of the CO/CP and R Stock it was a regular occurrence to turn at MH as well as Tower Hill. |

In practice, unless the service is running unbelievably well, there will be several each day. Some days you'd struggle to find one going through to Tower Hill! |

That was quite a post, Oracle, just to ask if we have a timetabled move into Mansion House bay!! We do indeed have just one timetabled move in the mornings monday to friday - but it is used quite regularly by late running Tower Hill reverser's (adw - the timetabled move is an Acton turn, which is why you weren't aware of it  ). For completeness, the last train to reverse at Dagenham East bay goes into the siding there - then back into the bay, out of service to Whitechapel bay, then out of service to Upminster. There is also a late night timetabled C stock move into Putney Bridge bay, and a late night D stock reverser on the Bridge at Putney bridge. All of these moves are known as 'rusty rail moves', to test points and keep the rails from getting to rusty. |

That guy whose posting on another Forum I lifted, spent several days touring around the NR network just to do #-overs and bays. As you all know there is a small book or leaflet available caled 'Bay Watch' which is written for those enthusiasts who crave travelling into and out of bay platforms. It seems that rare cross-overs are not enough, nor platforms for that matter. Ahem!  Oh all right! I admit I like Bay Platforms! There, I have outed myself! MH, TH, Eash Ham, DE, Barking...I have always been interested ever since a small boy when Mum took me on the District from Hounslow West to London on trips out.  |

Oh all right! I admit I like Bay Platforms! There, I have outed myself! MH, TH, Eash Ham, DE, Barking...I have always been interested ever since a small boy when Mum took me on the District from Hounslow West to London on trips out. You need to take a trip on a proper railway and see the bay platforms at Rickmansworth (do dissused) and at Chalfont & Latimer. |

Done C & L, and also did the branch in a D Stock on the D Stock Tour in 1980 I think it was! I suppose I should include Ongar, Hounslow West Platform 3...plus #-overs such as Hounslow Central [D Stock tour and one other], and oddiities such as Stanmore Sidings, Uxbridge Sidings, Watford Sidings, Ricky North Curve, Croxley Tip, Ruislip Met > Central via depot spur, Highgate Wood Sidings, Barons Court Siding, Ealing Bdy District>Central, Finsbury Park Picc>Vic, Northumberland Pk Depot, Baker Street Jubilee>Bakerloo, King's Cross and Euston Loops, Kennington Loop..but never West Ken strangely enough. Very, very sad I am afraid! There's no hope after 40 years. Sorry, forgot that we went to Amersham as mentioned before inthe D78 Stock as it was then called, and we did in fact get up to the 70 mph as promised with some welly exercised. I should remind that it went to Chesham and as such the A Stock shuttle stayed at home in the bay at C & L. The bewildered punters therefore had to be coaxed across the platform to the SB I think it was...a first if that was the case?...and then the tour train ran in service to Chesham and back. I believe I asked before if this was unique. |

Well it took a clear road, all the extra juice that the Met had at that time and a blooming long run with the pedal to the metal. The commentator guy in the cab was telling us the speed as it crept up to the magic then line speed of 70. Never been knowingly faster in a service LU train except perhaps the dreaded 1959 TS Northern Line tour when we went south into Colindale tunnels at Warp Factor 9 [my mate Brian Panting, t/op, was acting as volunteer Guard] and I swear we took off the rails. It was terrifying!

Brian and I knew each other through...oooh...bus preservation, North London Transport Society, LURS, when he was driving on the Picc [and I commuted from Hounslow West to Piccadilly Circus], and also through our mutual friend Dave Mooney [who is now at Neasden he tells me doing the depot signalling]. Dave says that Brian left the job some time back. Nice guy; very nice guy. After he went to the Northern he promised me an Acton Works > Northern cab ride which Gordon Hafter sanctioned, but it never happened.

I'm reasonably certain this guy got on my train ...though I thought it was on Tuesday !
The service was predictably up the wall and his planned times were probably fairly meaningless. Most scheduled Dag East reversers were being reversed at Barking, whilst the Upminster's were being reformed to put some on time and others round at Dagenham East. Mine was one of the latter.
I notices a guy at Becontree make a note of the numbers and time as I came in, when i changed ends at Dagenham East he was still in the train and remained there for the 15 or so mins I was in the bay road. The station supervisor then came up and told me he'd been riding trains into and out of Dagenham East bay for several hours. If he'd been closer I'd have chatted to him, but he was in the last car.
The "rusty rail" train 27, that forms the last Dag East reverser and then siding, bay, Barkings sidings, Whitechapel 25 road to Upminster, all empty, is worked by a Barking duty until it's home leg when it's taken by an Upminster duty from Barking to Upminster dt. However it almost always gets revised to form a through Upminster service, passenger throughout.
On a Sat, the same working is an Upminster duty throughout the interesting bit, but does not do the shunt into Dag East siding from the bay road. I have done it once, but being me, requested to work the whole lot as timetabled ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for that! I have re-read the guy's micro-gricing as he calls it, all four episodes of it! I am interested about the RR train. Is there still a Hounslow Central RR move from the west end of Northfields Depot?
