www.brunel-museum.org.uk/train_tour.aspx"Over the next few months, whilst the tunnel is closed for refurbishment, we have requested permission to run heritage trains through with a guide on board so that you can see the Thames Tunnel up close. This event is only possible whilst the line is closed to normal railway traffic and will not be repeated. Register your interest so we can contact you if permission is granted. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity." Anyone? I am currently looking sometime in March I think

Well the track bed is still being worked at Whitechapel, though the actual rails are now in place - how are they going to run trains when the railway, certainly at Whitechapel, isn't actually a properly set up railway?

I'm not asking how they will get trains onto the line - I'm asking how they plan to run trains through the tunnel when the Whitechapel end is not a complete railway. The Whitechapel end is a building site, quite literally, so I would have thought it'd be pretty much impossible to put in adequate protection - and what if a train needed evacuating? you cannot do that through a building site!
I would be astounded if such a thing were to happen anytime soon. Just prior to the line opening again maybe.....but not at the moment surely?

Restriction to 10mph working, temporary buffers, boarded escape route for the day? It's all surmountable.

Is the vintage bomb / artillery shell still on display in the tunnel?

Whitechapel is some distance from the under-river tunnel. If the working is on a "one engine in steam" principle, presumably a train could run from New Cross or New Cross Gate, through the tunnel to Wapping; then change ends and go back along the same track.

I'm just wondering what state the current railway is in and just how possible the whole idea is in reality, but I take the comments thus far on board.

It's got to be worth at least expressing interest!

I had a potter around yesterday and tracklaying appears to be well advanced, extending at least as far as Valance Road (between Whitechapel and the old Shoreditch). It looks like there's only one track in place (the northbound) at Whitechapel itself. Test running of trains is meant to begin this summer.
To get passenger stock in the connections at New Cross Gate will have to have been hooked up. They weren't last time I passed, a few weeks ago.

Overall, smells a bit too fishy for my liking! Seen similar things advertised, although the difference is that I don't know what this company are like! Last time I investigated anything like this, they took our money, tour didn't happen, money didn't get refunded because the company "got into difficulties" = £400 out of pocket!

OUCH! Well let's hope it would be no more that 15-30 quid, if it happens.
