Just a heads up that the A1 Tornado steam train will make its first commercial trip - and will be arriving in Kings Cross at around 1:45pm on Sat 7th Feb. Apparently, the platform will be open to the public for about an hour after the arrival for viewing. The train will be returning by modern traction, so if you want to see the first stream train built in the UK for nearly 50 years, the timetable (weather/delays permitting) is thus: Passes Doncaster: 09.38 Waters Retford: 10.04–10.19 Passes Newark: 10.41 Passes Grantham: 10.55 Waters Peterborough Yard: 11.31–11.56 Passes Peterborough: 12.00 Passes Huntingdon: 12.21 Passes Sandy: 12.29 Passes Biggleswade: 12.34 Passes Hitchin: 12.46 Passes Stevenage: 12.53 Passes Welwyn Garden City: 13.05 Passes Potters Bar: 13.17 Passes Alexandra Palace: 13.30 Passes Finsbury Park: 13.38 Arrives London King’s Cross: 13.47 www.a1steam.com/

It is well worth a look. I have been on the footplate and it is quite something - all new and shiney. It's the electronics which seem out of place! Shame about the German boiler though.

It's not Green is it? Only a gleaming steam train passed me at Richmond last week - I have to say, as a young'un, that it was such a pleasure to be that close to steam engine that was actually pulling a train!

Definitely wasn't - today will be the first time the A1 has been in London (indeed, its first time outside the North East of England).

Now I'll admit I can't tell the difference between one steam engine and another, but I swear blind that is the one I saw pass me in the Richmond area!
Is there not an outside remote possible chance it was being tested on the quiet when I saw a steam engine [that looked just like this one] at Richmond?

Is there not an outside remote possible chance it was being tested on the quiet when I saw a steam engine [that looked just like this one] at Richmond? They've publicised pretty much every testing move it's made, so if it had been sent down South I'm sure it would be common knowledge. I think the suggestion it was a Southern loco (or maybe the restored Oliver Cromwell...??) is a good one - I'm not very well up on what locos have mainline certificates at present, but if it's big, green and with smoke deflectors (I'm guessing?) there's not many possibilities! (I am right in thinking Flying Scotsman's in bits at the moment, aren't I? Otherwise it would be another contender)

Tornado is apparently going to Salisbury on the 15th via Staines and Addlestone then West Byfleet Junction. I don't know if CLAN LINE was around on a charter from Waterloo?

The train going past Richmond was probably the 35028 Clan Line - which regularly runs excursions from London Victoria station, and goes through Richmond on its trips.
The A1 Tornado will be running from Waterloo next Saturday morning as well before returning home for a while.

Whether you are a fan of steam or not it has to be said that to create such a machine from scratch in this day and age and then run it on the organisational nightmare that is the modern railway is an amazing achievement.

Having looked at the links provided by upfast, checking my recent duties and doing an image search on Google; it would indeed appear that I saw 35028 Clan Line running about 10 minutes late on the VSOE luncheon special, on Friday 30th January.
Sorry to cause offence to any steam experts, but to a very untrained eye, the locos do look fairly similar!

Oh yes, definately agree on that! Having watched a great deal many videos of this creation, I found myself getting nostalgic, shedding a tear or two. Hmm, perhaps in 50 years time, we can create a slam door EMU from scratch! One that didn't make it to preservation!
