So, what exactly happened on the Central Line Thursday night? I was nearly in stitches leaving Osterley as our controller announced over the radio that he'd been talking with their service manager and that he really had to stress that "they are extraordinary delays!" I could practically hear the envy in his voice... I gathered there was a signal failure at or near Liverpool Street (eastbound) from the radio chatter, but nothing else was forthcoming.

I had to travel from Stratford to Highgate via Bank during the start of the problems and it was really just a case of crowded trains for me rather than waiting around. Dont know if I was luckly. Especially as the Northern Line had problems due to failed train at Angel.

There were delays being reported until pretty much the close of service. Must have been a catastrophic failure if it went on for that long! Anyone got more info on this? Knowing the Central's complex ATO system, what kind of signal failure are we talking about? Loss of codes, forcing trains to run in R/M through the affected area may be?

If the service is screwed during the evening peak (which was roughly the timing for this one) then it's always quite hard to get it back on track before end of traffic anyway... from the way things were phrased it sounded like the signal failure couldn't be resolved, but beyond that, I don't know.

In my experience that is often one of the root causes. When in RM the train can't exceed 15-20km/h, and on a line as delicately balanced (in terms of peak capacity) as the Central, that sort of thing wrecks the service in a microsecond.

At about 21:05 I arrived on the platform at Marble Arch to see a 17 minute wait for the next train, with the next train 2 minutes behind it. By the time it finally arrived rather full, but I got on, the following train had slipped back quite a bit.
A friend who was on it earlier soon after 7 said they were holding all eastbound trains in platforms. He had been held up at Oxford Circus going west.

I wonder if that was actually a Service Manager ;D ;D ;D

I was on the Central line EB at Oxford Circus at around 17:45, and it was packed but trains were running relatively frequently. I don't really take that route often and just thought it was normal...

Whilst sitting outside Ealing Broadway, our driver was being very good letting us know what was going on. Though we could sense the frustration when he said "Ladies and Gentlemen, Driver Speaking, I've been informed that the train in the platform has been given the green light, but i just don't know why it is not monving, he's got a green linght, but he's just not moving...."
