I am thinking about stations that are still extant. I understand the lifts at Aldwych were never replaced, and were a factor in that branch closing 15 years ago.

You are right. They were never replaced although work was done on them in the early-1950s, which took them from "Standard Otis" to "Modernised Otis" status. That said, they were still essentially 1907 vintage when the station closed, and "they" weren't going to replace them for the relatively few passengers that used the station.
Last time I was at Aldwych (two years ago?), the lifts were still there. The doors were left open and they were "anchored down" to prevent movement.
From my notes, the oldest lift in service now is No.1 at Tufnell Park, type Wadsworth semi-automatic, in service 31/7/77. This marked the beginning of the replacement of the oldest lifts on the system. The only reminder of the old is, of course, at Aldwych - behind closed gates!

Until it's refurb, Mornington Crescent retained it's old 1907(?) lifts.

reganorak: You say semi-automatic - what is fully meant by that? Are the doors still the standard 'automatic' ones? I wish there were still old scissor gate lifts like at Aldwych and the like...

That makes me feel quite old, I installed the lift telephone system on that job although it was in 1979/80 and the lift works were still in progress.

The term "semi-automatic" is what was in the official list at the time - way back then. I assume that may mean automatic control, landing control, or passenger (push button to call) initiated?
Chalk Farm replacement began after the first new lift at Tufnell Park had been in service for a few months. Dates for info - Chalk Farm No.1 in service 11.06.79 and No.2 03.08.80.
