10 to go then.
The Wikipedia article is showing 5110 and 5234 as withdrawn from service; anyone know anything about this?

They certainly won't be able to scrap all the A stock by that date. But it may well be possible to be running an S-only Met service by then
I see the S stock replacement of the D stock being a retrograde step.
I suspect the thousands of people who used the District line yesterday, squeezing onto hot, sweaty trains with tiny single-leaf doors would strongly disagree with you.

I wonder what the "S stock withdrawals" thread in 30 years' time will look like.

We should be grateful that any stock are being preserved at all in the current climate. Given the limited space and funding of the LTM, it would surely be a waste to preserve both an A60 and A62, which are (to the casual observer)virtually identical.

So we've had the last scheduled Victoria line closure.
Does this mean the signalling upgrade/asset replacement is now complete, and we just need to wait for a new timetable?

Does anyone give any thought to the emotional state of a driver making the final run to Northwood Sidings? He/she is driving a train he has probably driven hundreds of times before, but this time it is The End. He/she will never ever see that train again. How must the driver be feeling making his/her way back to wherever on a normal passenger train? I would very much hope that the driver would act professionally, and ensure any emotions did not interfere with the safe operation of their train.

How future proofed would the TBTC system be for the planned splitting of the Northern line into two?

I'm sure most people on this forum would have been sad to see the brown trains go 50 years ago. It's what you are used to. The thing with the S stock is it isn't a very interesting train for the enthusiast. Couple (see what I did there!) this to the fact that it will replace all the sub-surface trains within the next 5 year thus ending any interest between the lines and their trains. If this forum had existed in 1961, it would have been full of people saying that the tin-can A stock had "no interest" for the enthusiast compared to the T stock, say. And doubtless in 30 years time there'll be plenty of S-stock fans mourning the demise of its "classic" design...

some see deeper and those are the ones that favour the A stock. Care to explain?

Doesn't seem much point in a tour if the only places the stock can go in pax service are on the Met line anyway!

Is it just a conincidence that no units in the range 5088-5122 (i.e. the "newer" A60s) have been scrapped yet?

Sending 5000 to Covent Garden would have been a poor idea. It would have got stuck in the Picc tunnels shortly after Barons Court :-)
Seriously though, there's no overarching reason why the first A stock unit should be preserved - it's no more special than any of the others. And the space required to store a unit of A stock is huge. I'm sure the LTM will do their best to save something but they can't just conjure up 100 ft of space for a 4 car unit out of nowhere. If you've been to the Acton depot you'll see things are pretty crowded there.
It's time to accept that the days of the A stock are over. It has many worthy features in its design, but it is life expired and the profile of the passengers it needs to carry is very different from 50 years ago. There are many more passengers needing to use the inner London sections of the line; plus many more with disabilities or pushchairs needing step-free access. A stock was the right design for the 60's and 70's; S stock is what is needed in the 21st century.

I can't believe they are going to get rid of 5000 since it has a lot of history to it and hoped they would preserve it at the lt museum or somthing. Gutted havnt had time to go and find it this week. Is it working tomorrow by any chance and if.so what times? Apart from myself anyone had good memories traveling in 5000? Are you volunteering your back garden?

Disagree about the ticket machines. Commuters will buy their travelcards at their home station (hardly anyone lives locally to Blackfriars) or, as is increasingly more common, buy them online and "download" them. There may be some demand for tourists heading for St Paul's, but they are more likely to head for the eponymous Central line station.

What's the reason for the seemingly endless series of weekend closures on the Met line? Presumably it's not for S Stock works as they now run in passenger service no the entire line?

The project timeline on TfL's website shows that "All new trains" will be on the Met line by the end of 2012. So a few A stocks will still be around during the Olympics, though I suspect they'll be confined to running outside the City.

Surprisingly TfL haven't updated the tube map on their website yet to show the restored interchange. They're usually pretty quick about these things - the ELL H&I extension appeared on the map the moment it opened. I can understand why they haven't updated the paper maps yet as they're probably waiting for Blackfriars to reopen.
