The SSR CBTC does drive more economically if the train would otherwise be early. Another place the difference is fairly obvious is King's Cross - Farringdon both directions where full performance is notably faster than the dawdling speed when running to time or early.

I suppose early 2026 can be stretched to mean up to June 30th! With SMA8 not until early 2025 things will need to move along pretty well after that to achieve early '26 for the Uxbridge branch since the rest of the Met line is due first.

I too loved the A stock. The 1973 stock has a much more modern (or sorts) camshaft arrangement and sounds less busy then the older 1972 stock. I will miss the 1973 stock. They still seem to be very effective albeit a little limited on capacity. The 1973TS reverted to a single camshaft machine per motor car, but with more switch contacts to accommodate motoring and rheostatic braking. It notches 'up' to Full Series and 'back' to Full Parallel. Just like a motoring only one. Then 'up' and 'back during a complete rheo brake sequence, finishing at the start position with the circuit configuration assisted by separate contactors.
67TS, 72TS and C stock had/have two camshaft machines per motor car. One each known as Series and Parallel camshafts. When the Series one reaches Full Series and notching continues into parallel, the Parallel one then notches up and the Series one runs back to its start. Thus the rather manic clicking at that time. The Parallel camshaft runs back after the scheme reaches Full Parallel which is retained by contactors. Hence further manic clicking! In rheo braking each camshaft runs up in turn and stays there until braking is either released or 'de-proves' in last notch, then both machines run back - more crazy clicking.

In an attempt to be reasonably diplomatic from an uninvolved position, I'd say slack governance of the project. For electric locos to gain route availability across all or most of LUL there is a lot of EMC assessment and design work to do to assure that the locos would be compatible, particularly but not exclusively with the various signalling systems. One can question whether specification and supplier selection were governed properly. And similar concern once the project was under way with contract placed. I'm not clear whether there was also supposed to be ATP provision for any of the post tripcock/trainstop signalling systems. If not, that would limit usability. One might consider that suppliers working in the field of small locos might not have the necessary resources at hand, but there are ways of addressing that using expert help from outside or possibly from within LUL.
Then during the project the immediate need for additional locos seemed to have slackened, at least for a few years.
Perhaps someone with more intimate knowledge will put me straight if I'm wrong!

Agreed it must be Parsons Green EB (towards Earls Court). Imagery from 2017 shows less of the houses with roof extensions than now, so matches up with the photo. Taken from just beyond the platform canopy area I think.

The tidy state of the platform and the newish green railing certainly seems to tie in with Putney Bridge WB platform 2 in April 2017, just under a year since platform 3 had been abolished and the through route used platform 2. The houses in the background don't seem to tie up with a Google Earth view though, nor with Google Earth views of Parsons Green.

Perhaps more mildly reworked D78 stock using most of the original equipment, overhauled, would have done the trick for longer after all. Wouldn't have got into trouble with now unsupported traction equipment etc. Just the wheels to puzzle over!

It's a benefit of being a frequent user for a variety of journeys that one can learn all these interchange characteristics and adapt one's journey appropriately. E.g change at Baker St Met to Jubilee for minimum time on cramped JL, vs. a few steps across the platform at Finchley Road and longer on the JL. Gives one a bit of an in the know advantage as the OP describes.
A few years ago the Circle line trains' CIS was tweaked to show 'via Victoria' on the Outer Rail at Liverpool St and 'via Liverpool St' on the Inner Rail at Victoria, to encourage an easier trip for those happy to sit it out on one air-con train rather than two stuffy Tube trains.

It is worth noting that this much work hasn't gone into refurbishing a train before. As Dstock7080 said the A stock and other stock were refurbished, but didn't have motors changed, a new DTS system etc. A more comparable project might be the refurbishment and retractioning of class 455s. My impression is that went faster but I don't know for sure.

It is indeed a complex work package so one would expect it to take a reasonably long time, but to get to here has taken at least as long or longer than a new stock project and if completion isn't until 2029 that's longer than the 92TS original construction phase took. I had cause to read a document I wrote in 2017 on another topic which had to mention 92TS in passing and for that I'd been told, and naively included, completion at the end of 2023. I seem to recall I added a bit to what I'd been told as well! Anyway I still wish the project well and hope they actually get on with more tangible progress soon.

Ah thanks, that's cleared it up. Select the route, then select start and destination stations on it, if they are not the end stations given for the overall route.

Hi there. A colleague has asked about the C stock DVA on H&C routes. Could one set all plausible destinations or was it just Hammersmith or Barking or Whitechapel? Not Plaistow for example? And if intermediate destinations weren't available selections, did the announcements not include the destination? I have this list of destination selections:
Key No. Route Given 1 Hammersmith to Edgware Road 2 Hammersmith to Whitechapel 3 Whitechapel to Hammersmith 4 Hammersmith to Barking 5 Barking to Hammersmith 6 Edgware Road Outer Circle 7 Edgware Road Inner Circle 8 Edgware Road to Wimbledon 9 Wimbledon to Edgware Road

My experience is that the northbound services continue to operate fairly smoothly. And on which points, I'd understood it was 44 which is where the SB local and SB fast merge south of Wembley Park station, but I guess it could also be 47B which is where the SB Jubilee crosses to the SB local Met for Jubilee trains to reach Neasden depot 'over the top' rather than via the flyunder.

Apparently the "investment committee report says a further 468m of track has been reworked in the deep tube". Reworked doesn't necessarily mean replaced. So I wouldn't necessarily count all that as replacement of particular rail fastening types. Some will have 'simply' been rail grinding.

Interesting. Good to see stuff happening which might help remedy the service. I've been on train before where the car I was in sounded like there weren't any motors at all, acceleration was sluggish for the train, no door chimes nor announcements. Is this a symptom of a traction motor being 'isolated' or just one of the many bugs on the 92s? Cutting out the traction with the TCCOS or the propulsion system self isolating shouldn't prevent door chimes and announcements. Probably something else wrong on that one as well.

Before S stock gets singled out too far, just a note to say that most LUL passenger trains now can only run a compressor with at least one DM car on juice as most only have 2 compressors. 92TS is something of an exception, having a compressor on each 2 car unit. It is (at last) the practice to take the need for a DM car to be on juice when doing gapping assessments on relevant lines. A train like S stock can still move with just a non-DM shoegear car on juice, but not if the Main Line air supply has depleted and caused the emergency brake to apply.

The Greater Anglia Aventras are in 5 car sets that couple to form 10 cars for busier services so there's still a bit of coupling/uncoupling in service. Liverpool St mid to late afternoon if you are interested. Replaced trains with shorter cars in 4 car units that could make 8's or 12's.
