Thanks for the new links. The intermediate ends seem slightly reminiscent of some Tube cars of the 1920s... The entire roof profile, with its vestigal clear-story, must surely be a nod to the Standard Stock of that era. Can some computer genius paint it into the appropriate red livery?

I'd say the railway is behind the hedge on the right, and there is a station behind the camera. The single no-parking line suggests a possible weekdays-only restriction on parking, such as might be found around a commuter station in a residential area.

" On any other line it’d feel very out of place..."
A male announcer?
I must be missing something here.

When money went up in twelves and twenties, everyone could count money. Now that it goes up in tens, everyone needs a calculator!

Yes, those are the ones. We had to modify them because of lineside attacks.

Thinking about it, no; I can't see such flexibility being available. The idea of being able to deliver a rail vehicle from one point on the network to another, by rail, is simply ludicrous.
Perhaps today's usual method, road transport, would be more feasible.

Or you could haul it to West Ealing ready for the day's service.

It's not so much the naming that can cause confusion; it's the bulk.
Strangers need a simple presentation, like fish and chips. Leave five different fish dishes with seven kinds of potato to the folk who are already familiar with the Savoy Grill.

Similar to the Tyneside units, then; except we used a round porthole.

I always thought it was silly of LT, in the days of Harold Wilson metrication madness, to adopt Km, especially measured from 0.0 at tyhe Ongar buffer-stops! I remember this crazy time. It was generally put out that anything British was 'wrong', and needed to be changed. There was even a covert plan for driving on the wrong side of the road!

Not necessary, as there is no longer a Hainault via Woodford service. .....at the moment You are talking about building-in flexibility here. Not TfL policy.

... They were called Multifare machines. That would be to distinguish them from the single-fare machines I loved as as kid. You could see how far you could go for three ha'pence.

If the decision had been to accommodate multiple different types of train, then the stations platforms would have been designed so they didn't require PEDs. What is it in the design that requires PEDs?

The original plan was to have a normal railway throughout; for the use of normal trains. Which would not have worked with platform edge doors. Correct. Which is one of the many reasons normal railways don't have platform edge doors. Once it was decided to build a New Tube instead, all these 'outdated' restrictions no longer applied. Even, incredibly, to the extent of using a non-standard platform height...

This is entirely a consequence of the Crossrail central section being built to a non-standard specification, after the original concept of a cross-London rail link had been abandoned in favour of yet another 'new Tube for London'. Something new to me. So was the original plan to have the core tunnel section normal platform height. The original plan was to have a normal railway throughout; for the use of normal trains.
