It would be because the, in this case, Northfields service is timetabled to depart before the train you are on from Cockfosters. Note that with the current timetable it isn't just Northfields trains that reverse at Arnos Grove but Heathrow and Uxvridge/Raybers services. During times of disruption there may be more trains reversing at Arnos Grove then there is timetabled. Generally trains run in a specific timetabled order and it's the timetable that guides as to which train would depart first in the example you have described in the original post. Does that mean that there are offpeak trains from Heathrow, Rayners, and Uxbridge that don't run all the way to Cockfosters?

On Sundays during the 1970s Amersham had 2 Mets per hour--a fast one and a local one(robbed from the Watford branch) to compensate for BR not operating between Amersham & Marylebone on Sundays.

I have been on the Metro several times in my travels to Washington, and I am surprised that it has taken this long for the line to reach Dulles--the major international airport that should have benefitted from a link back when it opened in the 1970s.

I left the UK in June 1975--and I remember the Liverpool St reversers in the peak (ex-Amersham and ex-Chesham), hourly services to Amersham off peak, and staff shortages. Were there still C stocks drafted from the Circle/H&C service to run up the main Met. And what was the set number of the train that arrived at Uxbridge around 0930 and stabled in the sidings until the start of the evening peak? I am thinking it was 46 but I could be wrong.

You got: Piccadilly Line! The small things in life amuse you. You love feeling like a tourist, and rarely spend too much time in one place. Considering that was one of my local lines for the 1969-75 timeframe, I'd say that is pretty accurate

I remember having one in my Matchbox collection It was #49 in the catalog. I'd have to look at some of my old catalogs to see if it came in Superfast form. Getting back on topic, I have a picture of an LT unimog in one of Ian Allan's ABC series from the late 90s.

I saw a picture of it on Facebook that the London Transport Museum page posted. It was going through a certain Uxbridge branch station on its way, possibly, to a depot of the same name

Instead of using the traditional NR symbol at stations where there is interchange with mail line railways, why not put the name of the TOC(s)? For example at Harrow on the Hill and Amersham on the Met, have it labelled for Chiltern Railways?

On various journeys on the Chiltern lines, I've had a driver who announced every (regular) bus service at every station including all the bus services to/from Aylesbury bus station; station staff who would announce via Amersham services as via the Metropolitan Railway; I've also heard announcements for the following stations: Leamington Spa General; Banbury General; West Ruislip for Ickenham; Chorley Wood & Chenies; and Aylesbury Joint Station. Has he also made reference to Northolt Junction (today's South Ruislip), along with interchange for the Central London Railway?

The westbound Piccadilly platform @ South Kensington is also left-handed, a throwback to the original construction of the station to provide interchange with the erstwhile deep-level District plans.

Rayners Lane in full on this old (1971) photo of a C stock. Surprised it was even on the destination blind. Wasn't a C stock used in passenger service on Sunday mornings ex-Neasden Depot to Rayners Lane, where it reversed to head on to Baker St and hence the Circle?

Also ruislip you might need to change your signature now there are no more terminators there. Consider it done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Getting back to the OP, there could always be a new westbound platform built at Ruislip, given all the room that is south of it. The original WB platform could be used as a place to terminate trains, given the potential of Uxbridge's three platforms being filled to capacity at certain times of day.

It is indeed true! Before "Moorgate" the Picc service used to be alternate Rayners Lane/Uxbridge (4 mins and 8 mins respectively). Then there was a 3 trains per 16 mins Met service (one all stations Baker Street, one all stations Aldgate and one fast Aldgate). I remember those well. Every Monday-Friday my mother and I would get on Met #45 (fast to Aldgate) or Picc 252 (Cockfosters, many times this train would be a 1938 stock) at Hillingdon for the daily commute to my school at Ruislip Manor.
