The Met has run longer trains before. So why won't the S stock fit at some stations? Pretty much what Benedict said! The requirement for train arrestors causes some problems, also the infrastructure has changed over the years with some platforms losing length. Signalling changes (track circuits etc.) have also meant that longer trains could effect capacity if they hold tracks down behind them that current trains do not.

Whilst longer trains may have run in the past, not only have buffers, sand drags etc changed; changed track circuits are likely to cause some major headaches in places - perhaps the most classic of examples is Edgware Road. I would imagine the platforms at Edgware Road are plenty long enough to accommodate a 7S, however the track circuits in the area, particularly the platform berth track circuits, will not cope with anything bigger than the standard 6 car C stock. Edgware Road used to be able to take longer trains, but was modified some years ago - it can't be the only location likely to cause such problems - in fact I wouldn't betting a fair percentage of platform berth tracks will need modifying...............and modifying track circuits won't come cheap....... This is all true, even 6 car 'S' Stock (this is for illustration, we are not ordering or delivering 6 car trains!) would cause problems at Edgware Road. Just as an aside, the Edgware Road re-signalling took place in 1997. Why indeed is S stock being built to a length which would appear to show an apparent lack of consideration for the limitations of the railway? It comes down to two things really, firstly the capacity issue which I have already mentioned and secondly the fact that under the original PPP the more people the Infraco could move the more they got paid (Journey Time Capability or JTC for short, we do love an acronym don't we?!! ;D ).

PRJB, just what percentage of the ~230 SSL platforms cannot accomodate their respective S stock trains at the moment, ignoring things like placement of OPO screens? I am not ashamed to say I do not know off the top of my head! I believe (don't quote me here) it is something like 30%.

Put simply, what I am saying is that each car has a set amount of equipment , so if you remove a car then you would need to find a home for that equipment. But surely the S7s prove a 3 car half-set is viable? So an S6 made of two 3 car half-sets or a Met S7 should also be?

The cars have equipment that is needed in the four car sets. I don't think you can just add two 3 cars sections together. For example you couldn't have a 6 car 1972 stock train!
Finanical implications also preclude the removal of cars too.

Initial testing of Train 2 (the first train to come to London) will be done on the north end. I didn't know that train 2 would be the first S stock in London. When should it be delivered for testing?
