All this talk about S Stock, we get 8 cars for the Metropolitan, 7 cars for the District and possibly 7 cars for the Circle and Hammersmith & City. So why not 8 cars for the District, the whole of the District was originally set up for 8 car working. It was reduced to 7 car working with CO/CP and R stock and then the 6 slightly longer cars of D78 stock. The only obstacle appears to be the general platform end clutter, barriers, mirrors and monitors etc. A little joined up thinking would see in cab monitors, to clear most of this and also help with the problem of 7 cars on the Circle and Hammersmith & City.

I believe that in the past there were real difficulties with 8 car trains. Narrow catwalks had to be used at some stations especially in the City sections. With guards it wasn't a problem, but with OPO it could be more difficult!

See te S stock stabling thread, many stabling locations are going to be abandoned due to 7 car trains for C stock replacement, if the District got 8 car trains half of Ealing Common Depot and most of Parsons Green sidings will also be abandoned. Platforms at certain locations, Mansion House and Tower Hill bay roads and Whitechapel in particular will be a big problem in berthing the trains clear of points..

It would be a major boost to the passenger-carrying capacity of each train, but if they berthed foul of points, then it would be an even more significant decrease to the throughput capacity, and therefore passenger-carrying capacity, of the line.

Exactly! This is why I don't think it will happen!

Under ATO couldn't the buffers be moved back to their original pre-Moorgate positions? This is a very valid suggestion yet it seems the opportunity will be missed for another rolling stock generation (2047?)

Whitechapel is being rebuilt eitherway. Tower Hill was built in the 60's wasn't it; when 8 car trains were still in vouge?

Pre-Moorgate positions will not be resumed because many trains can be driven manually on occasions-like the Central Line.

Yes but the new (and present) Vic stock cannot operate in unrestricted manual on ATO lines. Short(literally)-term thinking that will condemn another generation of District Line passengers to overcrowded trains.
