Two Battery Locos with one wagon went through Ealing Common around 12:00 today, in the Acton direction. L19 was one, forgot the other one's number. I got on the next Piccadilly to go to South Harrow and another Battery Loco went by, also in the Acton direction. Then, while waiting for a bus at South Harrow, I saw one go over the bridge, in the Rayners Lane direction. Anyone know where these were going?

Just remembered that the one I saw at Ealing Common, that its train number was 777.

Presumably battery locos go around in pairs not because they are too weak to pull even one wagon on their own but because the rear loco is being used as a goods brake (like what you never see on main line railways these days).

According to WIkipedia, they travel in pairs because many connections between lines require reversing moves.
I suspect that they travel in pairs even when they aren't required to reverse as it gives greater operational flexibility about where they can park in depots, and also so that you don't end up with an odd number anywhere.

I agree! Sometimes they use the Harrow reversing siding to get to Watford etc from Ruislip.

Makes sense - but there's one sitting on its own in the sidings just outside Northfields depot at the moment - been there for a week or so (unless its twin is lurking in the shed somewhere...).

That combination is the weedkilling train, 2 batteries with a rail wagon in between. It always runs as Set 777 too.

The can run singly, and do, but always top and tail if hauling something due to lack of run round facilities on LU.
