Having used the place for a couple of years, I noticed today that there is no customer display on the northbound platform (ie the dot matrix screen that gives the next couple of trains).
Anyone know why?

It's probably because it is right after a junction. This is the case at several stations.

It is very near the Mill Hill junction. Does that mean the device can't be sure what the train is doing until it has left Finchley Central?

I think that's the general idea. Look at Baker Street platform 5, you get very short notice on trains!

Don't think the junction argument is a valid one. If you stand at Euston southbound on either branch, trains appear on the dot matrix when they are up to 14 minutes away, and can coming from the Edgware or Barnet branches. Elephant and Castle northbound doesn't have a problem either, and yet there is a junction one stop before at Kennington.
There is also an issue with Golders Green southbound, which has been mentioned elsewhere, where the train only appears on the DM when it is approaching the station. The Northern doesn't use the signalling system to operate the DM's, but the PTI codes from the trains.

hmmm, likewise, Camden Town has indicators on all platforms
They do a lot of ad-hoc reversing at Finchley Central, does that make a difference.
I've also seen a fair number of trains at Camden not matching the station display. Given the small number of northbound joiners at West Finchley, and the potential for mis-information, it's not thought worth the bother.

If the northbound indicators at East Finchley can show whether a train is going to MHE, Barnet, or Finchley Central, there surely can't be any technical reason why an indicator at West Finchley could not at least show expected time until next train.
I suspect that, as ducatisti suggests, it's not considered worthwhile because (a) not many people get on northbound and (b) all the trains are going to Barnet.

However there are DMIs on the northbound platform at Totteridge and Whetstone, where surely there will be even fewer northbound travellers and the trains can only go to High Barnet.

There are definitely indicators at Woodside Park northbound (my home station). I always have a look at them when I am picking up Mrs Somersetchris to see how long the crew change (if any) took at East Finchley. Also they have those bl**dy annoying auto announcements. "Next train in one minute, next stop Totteridge and Whetstone".

Woodside Park is my local as well, their DMI, does show the next four N/B trains.
Maybe the equipment near West Finchley for transmitting the code needs to be fixed/upgraded. I think West Finchley is the only station North of Camden to still have the old style DMI boards, whereas every other station has VIDS [Visual info display]

I think that's the general idea. Look at Baker Street platform 5, you get very short notice on trains! Baker Street Platform 5 is connected to the fact the signalling system can't "see" any trains after they have left HSK or Hammersmith. There are no DMI's on the southbound platform at Balham (from memory) when I queried this there was a technical reason why this was the case as LU had placed minor works to have them installed but the cost was very expensive.
