could someone please tell me the year the exact year the 1995 stock were made and first delivery to LUL, some websites say it was 1995 but loads of others say that some were built in 1996 or 7 and say the name was just a random classification made up to distinguish it from the jubilee line stock, and if it was 95 why did it take 3 and a half years to put them into service?

The first 95 train arrived at Ruislip Depot in December 96! June 98 was the date of the first 95 stock train in service. There were many comissioning problems, and there were a lot of trains to replace too! The 56 stock went first and then the 59s were gradually withdrawn. The 62s and 72mk1s were gone by 1999 so the line was left with only 59 stock, gone too by early 2000.

Definately, 1959ts lingered on until the end of July 2000, as there was one set at Edgware parked up on the shedroad opposite platform 3...
Indeed there were commissioning problems with the 95ts fleet...

Delivery was late. The second train arrived at Ruislip 4 months after the first. The M doors on the first group of trains needed to be altered and many trains had to be stored. The bodies were built in spain and the rest assembled in Birmingham's Washwood heath factory. I guess the 95s were built alongside the 96s-a busy time for Althsom!
Why do the 96s have a side window on the cabs but the 95s don't?

Both the 1995 and 1996 tube stock have side windows on the drivers' side only. The other side has a filler cap - presumably for dealing with ice.

I thought that contained the cleaner for the windows.

I use Morden station every day....so if an answer hasn't been posted by tomorrow I shall find out!!!
I do like the 95's though, using them every day gives you an idea of the character they have, but this is nothing compared to the brilliant 1959 STOCK!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, I hate the 95 stock! In fact the only thing I like about the 95 stock is the tip up seats compared with the 96 stock!
You get on the 95 stock and they hmmm, and then move off slowly! They are souless trains! I loved the 59 stock, you felt like you were actually moving!

FWIW, I like the 1995 stock! ;D Having seen pictures of the old 1959 stock (I've only been on the Northern since the 1995s were introduced), 1995s are much smarter and I rather like the automated on-train announcements (Celia?). The 1959s were very tatty by the time they were withdrawn and because most of them were unpainted, the graffiti was very difficult to remove. Finally, why are the grab rails in the 1995s yellow rather than black? The refurbished D stock interiors have green grab rails and 1973s have dark blue ones but the Northern line 1995s have yellow not black....

I doubt black is really a RVAR (train access for the disabled) approved colour. It would make the carriages less bright though.
They should have put metallic silver rails on the 1996ts though!

Thats probably DDA stuff. Blacks a difficult 'colour' to see, especially if you have poor eyesite.

Silver was ruled out too for being difficult to see. Black of course as Ben says was unfair on those visually impared! In fact, discussed on another thread, 3 1972 mk1 stock trains were refurbished (although they stayed crew operated) to the same standards as the Bakerloo/Vic trains but were given, charcoal coloured grab rails (black ones were tried at first but turned down!) which ultimately were found to be unacceptable too. It would be interesting to see the inside of the 3 car 72 stock train in Acton works still had these coloured grab rails!
If anyone has the book 'Underground Movement' by Paul Moss there's a photo on p190!
David, I imagine line related grap handles will be phased out over the next 20 years!

The 73ts do have yellow grab rails by the doors IIRC so that could be to do with the DDA.

Last 59ts run was the 23rd IIRC. Did a Edgware-Morden run [Via Bank]

They are both great trains, but the last years of the 59ts and the last few years of the 95ts, they havent been looked after properly.

David, I imagine line related grap handles will be phased out over the next 20 years! Why? Did you see the 09ts mock up! everything was blue. On the other hand, I expect that grab handles on the SSR will all be one colour. Though since the 8-car trains are going to be different, they may be Metropolitan Mauve.

The high level horizontal grab rails on the 09ts prototype were Vic line light blue. Among the essay of comments I left was a suggestion to reverse this and have the majority of handle light blue and the high-level ones corporate blue (which is the same as Piccadilly Line blue I beleive) - if this is compatible with the DDA. I think I mentioned something about avoiding confusion with Piccadilly Line trains at the three interchange stations.
This is one of things I await with interest to see on the production 09s.

I do like the 1995 stock but I also liked the 1959 stock but I went on one prior to withdrawal in a horrid state by that time most of them were beacause alsthom just neglected them strangley the 1972 stock didn't look that bad
