I've been on various last tubes recently and was shocked on Friday night when I got the last Northern on the Charing Cross branch from Waterloo to Euston... It was really quiet... plenty of seats... I though oh it'll get busy as it passes through the West End (Charing X / Leicester Square / TCR), but it didn't. How come? I'm used (from the Eastbound central line) to last trains being packed beyond the standing room only point.

Highgate, Finchley, Hampstead, Edgware (etc.) are very respectable suburbs, where everyone is in bed with their cocoa and a book (or someone who has read one) by 22.30.

The last Northern line trains on the CX branch (and indeed the Bank branch) heading south are pretty busy.

I've never had cause to catch those... it just really surprised me... That said for all I know the previous train may have been through only 2/3 minutes before (I did have to run across Waterloo to be sure of making it). It may also have been busier if pax didn't then have to wait over an hour for the next/last service out of Euston... (2am on a Friday night)

I am surprised at this too, I tend to find the last Barnet is very busy [This comes via Bank] The last Charing X goes to Edgware.
Was it running late Suncloud?

Someone mentioned the eastbound central line - I have used it many times during the late evening, and it's always packed. New Years Day @ 2am, it was just like 5.30pm on a weekday - except that everyone was merry and having a laugh!

I am surprised at this too, I tend to find the last Barnet is very busy [This comes via Bank] The last Charing X goes to Edgware. Was it running late Suncloud? It arrived at Waterloo on time (0035) or a minute late maybe... put it this way I arrived in on the mainline about 0030 and only had about a minute to wait once on the platform. Superteacher, I know the late trains on the Central pretty well... and are busy throughout the week... (although mores so thu/fri/sat than mon/tue) but would expect to be standing if i got on between Holborn and Liverpool Street E/B any night. The only quiet time I feel on the Central line is the hour after the morning peak's ended around 10-11... And maybe some of the earliest trains (but i wouldn't know but they're fairly busy when I've got on at the East End heading in at 7am). So I'm not expecting the Northern to neccesarily be /as/ busy, but busier than it was.

As a resident of Woodside Park,. I do be in the pub later than 2230, and hate Cocoa. I think it is safe to say that the 2nd last train was just ahead of the last, hence why it was empty.

My nearest station is also Woodside Park. But I am in North Finchley. Last night though I was in East Finchley and returned home on the N20 as the last tube had gone. Plenty of pubs around here which will refuse to let you leave and force you to stay there drinking until the early hours. One worrying thing was I failed the breathalyser and therefore was refused service in the late night kebab shop in north Finchley. They advised me that I needed at least another 4 pints before they would serve me

I've only taken the last train to Highgate from Kings Cross once on a Friday evening, and it wasn't too busy. No more than a busy lunch time on a Saturday! However, Sydneynick, even though we Finchtonians are respectable people, I can tell you that after the last tube, the night/24 hour buses get rather busy going into Friern Barnet/North Finchley!
