Browsing through the forum and reading about the Toronto accident made me think about when there was timetabled single line working over the NB between Hampstead and Golders for asbestos removal - I dug out the timetables for that period (published date May 78) and found a note [1] in the Sat TT saying - 'serious consideration was given to signalling alterations to allow something better than this timetable'. Presumably those alterations involved some bi-di over the NB - anyout there know anything [1] note in my handwriting from talking to the lender of these TTs

There was asbestos lining installed in the NB tunnel south of Golders Green in the 1930s, as part of Frank Pick's experiments to reduce noise in the trains. The dangers of asbestos were not known then, and it was thought that the lining might absorb some of the sound. Fortunately, it did not work, otherwise it might have been installed in all the tube tunnels.
Eventually, someone in LU realised that it was not a good idea to have asbestos in the tunnel, and it was removed. This obviously required that the NB tunnel be closed.

That's exactly what they did. The signalling was altered to allow the NB tunnel to be used in either direction played hell with the service, the asbestos (blue) was in the SB tunnel LU have removed asbestos from lots of locations over the years although it is still found and in some cases never removed. Part of the Picc tunnels were sprayed can't remember where.

If I remember correctly SB trains used the middle platform at Golders G then via the NB loop before going SB to Hampstead.
