It was originally called Highgate, but when Highgate opened, it changed to Archway.

marxton Square! silly name...
the proposal was to change it to something to do with Whittington, as Dick Whittington did all kinds of things in Archway (or Upper Holloway as it was) Archway was only called Archway after the bridge over the Archway Road (A1), now affectionally known as 'Suicide Bridge', was opened as it was the Archway in to London from the North. Before then it was called 'Upper Holloway' as reflected by the railway station nearby.
They want to change the station name to "attract more tourists"
what tourist wants to go to an area where the main attraction is Quasar?!

If you're gonna change it to something bland, meaningless and anodyne; you might as well call it 'NN'. ;D ;D ;D
Imagine the unfortunates trying to book tickets to there......

It was originally called Highgate, but when Highgate opened, it changed to Archway. It actually went through a unique name-change transition, from 'Highgate', then 'Highgate (Archway), then 'Archway (Highgate), before finally becoming 'Archway'.

According to this the plan was to name the station "South Highgate" and the shopping centre Marx Square, after famed shopper Karl Marx. Thank god it seems to have been forgotten about.

Marx is buried in Highgate Cemetery 5 mins from Archway, that would be why. But seems a bit odd to name something after a philosopher who had millions killed following his philosophies.

That sounds like it would be more apropriate for a South London shopping centre...

Interesting anecdote: Ahh, Fletch graced his beloved Isobel here, leaning against this very stone... {Porridge Trivia}

Francis Bacon invented frozen chicken nearby. Maybe they should change the name to reflect that event?
