A silent but important change is happening March 19th which may possibly see delays on the Northern Line reduce.
From 19th March, the Northern embraces cab secure radio which could save 10 -15 mins off some service related problems.

I am surprised that Connect is not on the cards - I think I have seen the telltale aerials lurking amongst the cable runs.
I think the first tube line to go Connect will be the Bakerloo - it seems to have the most infrastructure in place.

Connect is still at least a year away.
But trunk has been on the Northern for a few years now. Surprised that the cab secure protocol hasn't been used before.

The Victoria line is next in the next few weeks.

I seem to recall there being a couple of trains equipped with radios that were tested on a regular basis, suprised the heck out of me the first time I was called for a radio check.

Yep, I remember the foot operated button on the 38s to transmit.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but are you referring to the fact that T/Ops will soon be able to take authority from the line controller over the train radio for certain procedures, e.g. applying the rule?

It's related to the ability for train op's to be able to accept authority to pass a semi-automatic without direct authority from the SS.

Blimey, just thought. Under the new "Rule Book" now if a train on the northern has a Semi-Automatic (or even Automatic) signal remaining at danger and needs to be passed under the correct procedure NO Station Staff will be required at all. Next round of "dumbing down" anyone? All in the name of customer service.

How can that be? Surely once the train has tripped past the signal it will be past the OPO monitors.

Well under this new, exciting "Rule Book" any station/train with PEDs or In-Cab CCTV, no longer requires the Second Right.

Northern doesn't have OPO monitors, but in cab CCTV.
AFAIK the procedure for passing a semi-automatic station starter hasn't changed - although the Central Line has for a long time not needed a SS to authorise a train past a station starter.
The procedure is more related to semi's in the pipe or non station starters.
Controllers can soon use trunk to authorise a train past a semi-auto when an RS visual is available and is illuminated.
