Today I went to T5 to have a eyes see (of course I went by LU). The station is quite modern, but doesn't have that feel that you are on the Underground (probably because it's a staiton which the LU goes, but belongs to BAA), there is armed police, staff runing around with walkie-talkies. Personaly I don't really like the station. Unfortunatly there is a sign saying you can't take photos there, so I don't have any. The terminal itself is ok, very glassy, it's better than the staiton but isn't too impressive.

i passed through earlier myself en route to home in slough. yes it looks nice and modern but somehow it feels a bit sterile, i think they should've taken a leaf out of the book used for the jle. i also saw a couple of guys in 'lu uniform' despite there not being any lu csa's designated to work there but that's another kettle of fish

Unfortunately BAA has a strict policy of no photography anywhere in its stations, and the station managers are allowed to chuck people out for doing so, so good on you for listening! The armed police presence will fade in a few weeks. Its the opening of a new building in one of the busiest airports in the world, you'd expect to see them! Because all station staff at T5 have their own "emergency sweeps" to complete, they need to be contactable at all times, so that's why many staff are walking around with radios. As for the LU uniformed person, this could of only been the "train op supervisor", as I can tell you for a fact that the LU T5 station staff wear black suits, having seen them all wearing them! But in general, T5 is like a big modern hospital with branding. Nothing spectacular certainly, but much improved on the other stations!

I'm guessing that BAA's plan to not allow LU staff on the station who are members of organisations which BAA consider radical have been dropped?

I got handed a ticket from T5 this morning - it was a short fare so I held onto it, and only later did it occur to me to look at it. The fifth ticket issued from TOM 6, if I'm reading it correctly.

BAA originally planned to deny LU staff who are members of radical organisations such as Friends of the Earth access to their premises. I'm sure membership of that organisation would have been swelled by Picc line drivers if that happened. You're right there, the RMT doesn't count

No surprise there, considering the current HEx staff staffing the Ticket Office have had no more than a couple of days on LU tickets and the new TOM's, and they are the "most trained" as well...

This alludes to something from before were there were mass protests arranged around the airport area a while back against expansion. sheep ltd(baa) were seeking a court injunction to prevent anyone belonging from certain organisations from entering a zone and they were seeking to extend the ban to travelling protestors using transport services

ISTR it was a very widely drawn list, including organisations like the National Trust.

ISTR it was a very widely drawn list, including organisations like the National Trust. Yep but BAA is just another travel company and shouldn't have such power which tramples the rights of individuals. Thinking of the rights of individuals have all the train operators been subject to PNC checks before being allowed to enter the site as part of their duties? Personally I think the UK should be closing airports rather than opening them in order to go some way towards meeting the green targets. I had to laugh when I saw the problems with baggage on the news yesterday and I understand the problems continue so I'm still amused. Heathrow always was a PITA to work at but I expect it's ten times worse now.

I can't pass comment on what it's like to work there as I never worked on the Picc, but a friend of mine who is T/O at Acton Town has spent a number of shifts on standby in Terminal 5 Signalling Equipment Room. At least he had a nice new clean room, unlike some that I used to have to go in!
As for the service - looks like the ghost service since January hasn't ironed out the teething problems, as there were thirty-plus minute gaps to T5 on Thursday evening.

You must be imagining that ;D Must have been even bigger gaps to T4 - best get off at Hatto Cross and get a bus under the FreeFlow Heathrow banner!

Out of interest, how much time is being allowed for reversals at T5?

An ex-colleague from Acton Town told me last year that all Tube Lines staff had to be PNC checked before being allowed to work at T5. As for the clean room as an ex Picc Line TO myself a room is a room is a room. He'd be hoping his relief arrives on time wherever he was standing by.

Out of interest, how much time is being allowed for reversals at T5? 15-20 mins : So straight in, take their 6 mins (or earlier if due off at Acton EB) and back out again!

Must have been even bigger gaps to T4 - best get off at Hatto Cross and get a bus under the FreeFlow Heathrow banner! Strangely not - 30 min gaps to T5, T5 trains going round at T123 (where possible) and the rest being stacked round the loop. Not bad if you want to go to T4!

It is quite a steep gradient to T5, it may be the echo from the braking. Have you noticed how much wide the tunnels are?

They look about the same as the other tunnels to be honest.
You get the same sounds on the HEX, but since they (I Assume) have a lot more soundproofing you don't notice it half as much. It really did hurt my ears.

It can get really noisey on the Jubilee line extension too, despite it being smooth. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think the larger tunnels may have the effect of amplifying the noise more...

The equivalent of internal end correction and the wheelbase finding the resonant harmonic - I don't think you're far wrong, but I'm far too 'occupied' <heh> to do the relevant maths. ;D

I have to say the JLE track is the noisest I've found. The Central between Stratford and Leyton (tunnel part) isn't far off that either.

They look about the same as the other tunnels to be honest. They are large enough to be able to stand in the cess and a train safely pass.

Probably needs a bit of grinding to reduce the noise - though I doubt BAA would want a nice sparking grinder on their premises! I have noticed the gradient - according to the scale plan 1 in 40 up which is pretty severe. What I hadn't noticed was the tunnel width - apart from the location at WY7 which was the first new location in a tunnel I've seen in years!
