Changing at King's Cross to-day I was momentarily fazed by the description of the platform I wanted as "eastbound". Well, Manor House (where I was going) is east of KX, of course, but I really think of it as north of there.
Perhaps the line should be described as "northbound" and "southbound" north of Covent Garden and "eastbound" and "westbound" there and points west. Or doesn't TfL like to let on that tubes can go round corners?

Lines are defined as running north/south or east/west according to the general direction of the line. The Jubilee line is the exception- it changes from north/south to east/west at Green Park. In the case of the Piccadilly line, it runs more east/west than north/south, hence the description you saw. Having said that, departing from Cockfosters on a westbound train, you will actually head east to Oakwood!

I'm pretty sure that at Holborn the enamel signs in the passageway pointing to the stairs down to the platform indicate "Westbound" and "Northbound".

I beleive that the line was previously referred to as "Northbound" and "Southbound" between Cockfosters and Holborn, and "Eastbound" and "Westbound" between Holborn and Heathrow / Uxbridge. However, some time ago, there was an edict from up high which said lines must have only one direction - hence the EB WB.

The Met is known as East/West between Harrow on the Hill and Uxbridge and between Baker Street and Aldgate. Plus if you want to be flash it can also have Up, Down, Inner and Outer!

I'm fairly certain that when I used The Picc a fair amount back in the 70's and 80's KX to Cockfosters (at least) was signed North and Southbound..... Thing is, when you know where you are going, you don't tend to take a lot of notice of the platform indicators.

In 1997, the signs at the bottom of the lifts at Russel Square said "Northbound" for Cockfosters trains and "Westbound" for Heathrow/Rayners trains.

Well, if there was an edict that a line could only go in one direction, so to speak, it seems to me that someone didn't have enough toys to push around their desk.
I discovered to-day that at King's Cross the Victoria line is described as having northbound and southbound platforms, although of course it goes east of the Piccadilly after Finsbury Park.
