Any idea how many station before Hatton Cross the DVA says "Customers for Heathrow Terminal # should change here and wait on this platform for a train to terminal #"? The first is Hounslow West...so 1. For some bizarre reason, that's where they want them to get off! Not at Hatton Cross where all terminals can be reached for free, should the railway be broken!

Presumably so people dense enough to miss Hounslow West still have a chance to change at the next station..!

The primary reason for advising them to alight at Hounslow West is simply due to the platform having a slightly larger passenger capacity than Hatton X, thus they hope the vast majority will heed the advice. Hence why Hounslow West is staffed by a baton waver and Hatton X isn't. And no, I haven’t measured it (and I don’t ever intend to!) but this is the official explanation from those who wear the big hats.
The secondary reason is, as the previous poster states, to give the dawdlers/the sleepers/the i-poder's/the unsure etc a 2nd opportunity to change at Hatton X.

Yup, especially the iPoder's! I was on a northbound Piccadilly Line train from Acton Town once, and as we were pulling out of Holborn, they suddenly opened their eyes (and ears) and asked if Green Park was the next stop! ;D

At Heathrow Terminals 1,2&3 going towards T5 does it say "This is a Piccadilly Line service to Heathrow Terminal 5."

The answer is nope; it will just say "This is a Piccadilly line service to Heathrow Terminals 123 and 5." - it isn't as sophisticated as the Northern/Central line's 'via' system in that respect because I believe the terminus just relates to the displays at the front of the train, which the driver will not change just for one stop.
