Hi
I don't suppose anyone has any recordings of the new Picc DVA?
TIA

Trust me Tom, it's not very exciting - when posters on here said it was Emma Clarke I raced to the Picc to hear it - but sadly it's not Emma and it is not very good.

I noticed the other day forthe first time (call me slow) that the trains now say "This is a train to Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3".. no mention of 4... When the new one was installed, I thought it used to say t4 as well.. has this recently changed?

The trains termination point is Heathrow Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Terminal 4 is a completely different station which is before 1, 2 and 3, and as indicated on the tube map, the trains go in a clockwise motion, with T4 first. And as there is now a DVA, people will also have advanced warning about the next station being T4.

I think this DVA is too wordy and adds to dwell times. Does anyone else think the voice could be Kay Alexander?

I'm pretty sure that it's the same voice used on the Southern Electrostars and Turbostars, but still don't know who it is.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I didn't see the point of starting a new one. On my Piccadilly Line travels today, I got on a train which plays a chime before the announcement is made. Is this a test feature or a they going to be rolling it out on all the stock? Recording can be heard here.Cheers, David

There is only one unit that does that. Now, to be honest with you we have had so many problems with the DVA (stations missing, too loud, too quiet, not working at all) I couldn't say whether this is intentional or not.
There is due to be an upgrade programme though, so the "bong" may well part of it. All cars have ambient noise sensors fitted, but they operate erratically, which is why we have problems with volume being too loud/quiet. There are 6 units that have been modified and are currently running live tests.
We are also unable to set routes to T5 with the current software, so this will need to be enabled. Interestingly, on the laminated DVA instructions I was given last year, Ealing Broadway will also be able to be set as a destination.

All cars have ambient noise sensors fitted I take it this is the same as what we had at Fulham Broadway - where it tries to beat the background noise but ends up trying to beat it's own volume level?

Are all cars fitted with DVA by now, by the way? I'm quite happy with it, really. I wonder if we'll also be hearing "Change for the London Overground" as of November.

Not quite - 2 out of the 8 73 stocks I got on last Monday had no DVA, which was ever so slightly annoying given I'd gone out to record it .

You were probably just unlucky that the drivers had switched it off, which we have been instructed to do if the announcements are too loud.

I ask the drivers to turn it off If I have a long journey. Its too loud! Most of them oblige though.

Aren't the DMI's coordinated with the destination panel, so they are programmed to display "This train is for ......." as long as that's set. But the "toblerone" coordinates with the the DVA to display the full announcements on the DMI, overriding the destination panel?

I was thinking of Finsbury Park, but of course the ELL is not going there in the end. Not yet, anyway. I wonder if it will happen on the other lines, though. Not sure how quick on the ball LU is with these things in general.

I travelled on the Pic yesterday for the first time in a while, of the two trains I travelled on (Acton Town -> Osterly, Osterly -> Hammersmith) both DVAs seemed to work well, even if the second one was perhaps a little too quick to announce the next station (I'm not totally convinced the rear car was fully out of the station when it announced the next one on one occasion!)
When I was photgraphing at Osterly (or should that be "Osterly please mind the gap between the train and the platform"), several trains called at the station and played their DVA announcements at me. One of them was so loud that I could hear it perfectly through the closed train doors over the noise of an aircraft passing overhead!

The system seems to be the same as that used by Southern on their Electorstars and Turbostars. The announcing of the next station almost immediately after departing the previous is more noticeable on these services, but there is another announcement when actually approaching the next station, which would be really silly on the Piccadilly. This can still be very confusing as almost every other DVA that I have encountered only makes one announcement.
The other system that I have encountered with two announcements per station is the somewhat ropey system that One have recently installed on their 317 units. This sounds like it is voiced by someone who happened to be free at the time, rather than a professional voiceover artist.

I can quite often hear the this-train-terminates message on trains pulling into the platform at Arnos or Oakwood, yet I can't hear a radio message from my supervisor when a train is pulling in...

I think quite a few Heathrow passengers do get confused by the message "this train terminates at Heathrow T1, 2 and 3", even though it's technically correct. Many won't understand that the train goes via Terminal 4, I think, even though the map indicates that it does. Others won't know what terminal they need to go to yet. It'd probably be easier to have it say this train terminates at Heathrow Airport up until T4, then change it into T123, if that's at all possible.

I think probably better would be "This is a Piccadilly Line train to Heatherow Terminals 1,2 and 3 via Heathrow Terminal 4".
Some message like this will be necessary when T5 opens as trains to there will go direct from Hatton Cross to T123.

I was at Turnpike once and some harried looking woman with a suitcase came up asking if *any* of the trains actually went to Terminal 4. She was annoyed (but thankfully in a good enough mood to still laugh at herself) when I explained.
As for not knowing what Terminal, don't you always get told that with your booking? I know whenever I've been over to America I've been given the terminal number or letter for each part of my flight.
