Along with the Bakerloo, the Piccadilly celebrates its 100th anniversary later this year [Hammersmith - Finsbury Park]
Anyone know if any plans are in hand to celebrate this anniversary?

Wouldn't it be nice if someone answered "They're doing a special railtour!" Alas, it shall never be 100 years. Blimey. I bet the people who worked so hard to build it would be so proud, and deservedly so!

"They're doing a special railtour!" Some may see this as an excuse for the 1938 TS unit to come out to play, but one idea I have to celebrate the centenary is to open the doors of Aldwych once again.

I guess, judging by the lack of activity in this thread, that LUL have no special plans for this anniversary?
Sad, in my opinion.
It would be nice to see some sort of open day on certain sections, with perhaps some of the oldest available rolling stock coming out for an airing.

I believe somewhere on the tube intranet, ideas were asked on how to mark the centenary - so the management knows its coming. It will probably be something similar to the Bakerloo line centenary, which is more just a presentation on the side.
Much as many people would like to see a Railtours, its very unlikely to happen because of various reasons. Many times in the last year there has been attempts to organise running some kind of special train for one reason or another (Shoreditch or T4 loop), but they all hit the buffers.
I remember in the early 90s, they ran a special tube stock between Arnos Grove and Cockfosters - I think to commemorate 60 years of the extension of the North side of the Picc line.

I concur with soultrain - the centenary will be recognised officially by LUL, but is likely to be very low key.

Several sections of the line are covered by other lines, so closure of small sections would not really be that much of a problem, would it?
If these closures took place, then the opportunity for some of the older stock to come out to play would be a more realistic possibility.

I think that maybe a guided tour (done tactfully) of the line by historians and present Underground staff would be a nice tribute to 100 years of the Picc. It is a very very interesting line - more or less a representive of every type of architecture style on LU is there. It really is - Charles Holden, Leslie Green, District Railway (such as North Ealing), modern age (as Hillingdon) the list goes on and on. So many different designs, and so many landscapes of London covered. Not to mention the links with railways past and present, little gems such as Platform 6 (The Hostel) and indeed Platform 5 at Holborn with it's Aldwych branch. York Road and Down Street (latterly an air raid measure, like Holborn Pfm 6), the history round Hounslow with the Town station and another disused one at Osterley and Spring Grove. There is so much there. The Picc anniversary should be celebrated and people shown how interesting the line is. As said, there's more to it than meets the eye

Just remembered - remember Bumper Harris? I'm sure his wooden legged escalator went to the Picc platforms at Earls Court. As Rob Curling says in the Picc DEV, shall we all celebrate with lunch at the Criterion??? P.S Don't forget the gold key that doesn't fit

Thats right, Alex. Bumper Harris rode up and down the escalator all day, showing people how to use the new invention. Escalators at the time, ended in a 'wall', so you stepped off sideways. It was at Earls Court. I think that Aldwych should be reopened on the day with a 'museum' of the lines history. Mention should also be made of the Reno Spiral Escalator that was installed at Holloway Road. Bumper Harris apparently bellowed out THIS WAY TO THE MOVING STAIRCASE, during his demonstrations...

Indeed, I forgot about the spiral. Someone told me once that there's two theories on how it didn't work, 1 - The Board of Trade deemed it as unsafe so it wasn't used, and 2 - that it didn't work anyway. I believe parts of this staircase to be at Acton Museum Depot - is this true?

I believe parts of this staircase to be at Acton Museum Depot - is this true? Parts of this device are at Acton. I had the opportunity to inspect this while it was still in the shaft and was finally able to see how it worked. For the record, a spiral escalator of similar design was exhibited at Earls Court (not the station) as a fairground ride prior to the date of the Holloway Road version and appeared to have worked quite well. The device installed on the GNP&B was not ready when the line was visited by the Board of Trade and was never inspected by them. It appears not to have been owned by the railway, having been put in as a demonstration unit, and was not used by the general public.

There is a "design a station competition" apparently its timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Piccadilly.

There is a "design a station competition" apparently its timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Piccadilly. Well, that's far better idea than the fashion photos (including the one that is verging on paedophilia) that are celebrating the Bakerloo Line's 100th. Of course I'm sure that we would all like a railtour!

Maybe we can do our own. Get everyone together and invade a 73ts from Finsbury Park to Hammersmith.... Well, its better than nothing! ;D Seriously though, have any LU staff heard anything on the plans for the 100 years celebrations, if any!?

If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't have known about the Picc being 100 years young. Internally, LUL is keeping very.......very quiet

Internally, LUL is keeping very.......very quiet Nothing new there then I'm going to give the LTM a try, although I suppose they'll be quiet to, its worth a try! Got a reply: Thank you for your enquiry regarding the centenary of the Piccadilly line. There are a number of events planned for the celebration of 100 years of the Piccadilly line. The link below takes you to the Transport for London website detailing the 'Thin Cities' competition to design a station of the future. www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/arts/platform-for-art/artists/thin-cities.aspPlatform for Art is commissioning a series of new artworks celebrating people, stories and architecture of the Piccadilly line. Artworks will feature at many of the stations along the length of the Piccadilly line. The link below takes you to the Platform for Art web page indicating that the works will be on display from December, as yet it does not contain images of the various works. Please find below some details of a few of the artworks that will be on display at various stations. The are however activities of this nature planned for many more stations. Hammersmith station. Artist: Keith Wilson A sculptural work to be sited in the large space in the ticket hall. Keith will make a passage from steel that echoes the shape of the map of the Piccadilly line from Hammersmith to Finsbury Park - the oldest part of the line. Viewers will be able to walk through the sculpture. Wood Green. Artist: Hobbypop museum This group of artists will make images relating to the local area and the station painted directly on aluminium panels and placed behind the high frieze in the station ticket hall. Southgate. Artist: TBC A small architectural detail (known by the staff as the cactus tower) on the top of the station will be specially painted to make it stand out as a quirk of the station design. This will be one of a series of small architectural features at various stations given special treatment to make them stand out Piccadilly line 'Above the Ground' poster. Artist: Nils Norman Piccadilly line trains feature a special image showing what's above ground along the line. A new version of this concept will be produced and installed. I anticipate that the nearer that we get to the centenary in December the more information will appear on the Platform for Art web pages. www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/arts/platform-for-art/forthcoming-programmes. asp The Museum is running a 'Piccadilly Style' tour on 6th September but unfortunately this is completely sold out. The Museum is also involved in a dance project called 'Sardines.' This piece will illustrate the history of the Piccadilly line through dance and involves working with local schools to promote history of the Piccadilly line. 'Sardines will be performed at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith on 10th & 11th December, along with dance pieces by students of the two schools involved in the project. There will also be a photographic exhibition at the theatre celebrating the Piccadilly line from 5th December until the end of the year. The Exhibition will then transfer to City Hall where it will remain until26th January. Many commemorative items will be available for purchase from the Museum shop although they are not yet detailed on the shop web page find the link below and check nearer to December. www.ltmuseumshop.co.uk/product.asp?prod_id=460 For further information I would suggest that you keep an eye on the Transport for London, London's Transport Museum and Platform for Art websites. I hope that this information is helpful. Yours sincerely The Resource Desk London's Transport Museum

So, here's to you, oh ever faithful Piccadilly Line. May you continue to haul our (excess) baggage to Heathrow, transport the masses to the ever-overcrowded Covent Garden and Leicester Square stations respectively, and may sweaty hands and bodies continue to stick and to cling onto those corporate blue grab poles.

Apprently, Tim O'Toole will be at Finsbury Park Station today dishing out some roundel cake. Sadly, I don't think I'll get a slice of this said cake. I think it's for management and the cronies only. The spoilsports.
