When the W&C was apart of Network Southeast, were drivers employed just to drive the drain or did they do what they do now (which is having some Central drivers go down to the W&C for a period of time?)

To answer the OP, I was a driver at Waterloo from 1980-1988. Waterloo had a drivers' roster of 4 links,
1 link done all suburban routes, Salisbury/Exeter/Bournemouth/Weymouth/Portsmouth, traction knowledge was all EMU stock including REP/TC, diesels 08/33/47/50/73, not W&C.
2 link, much the same, but not usually beyond Salisbury, plus W&C
3 link as 2 link, but not Salisbury/Exeter.
4 link all suburban routes, Portsmouth via Haslemere, W&C. EMU traction only, not REP/TC.
Drivers were rostered "downstairs" on a daily or weekly basis, once "downstairs" the driver was "downstairs" for the day. A driver rostered "upstairs" would only work "upstairs" in a day. There was no mixing of W&C and main line work during the day. The only exception was a the "cover" or "spare" driver who could be put to work upstairs or downstairs depending on route knowledge and availability. But there was nothing to stop a driver doing a couple of days upstairs and a couple of days downstairs, depending on the roster.

When the W&C was transferred to LU, and the 92TS painted in that silly NSE livery put in commission, presumably Waterloo links 2.3 and 4 were retrained to drive it? Quite a lot of drivers...How and when did the idea of giving its operation to Leytonstone LU drivers arise?
I always regretted the transfer, since the W&C was still operating as a useful NE-SW link when LT was on strike!

When the W&C was transferred to LU, and the 92TS painted in that <...> NSE livery put in commission, The 1992 stock was already on the Waterloo & City line, as they were introduced in NSE days. However, they were tested on the Central line, as I used to work close to Leytonstone station and saw 8-car trains of the new stock out on test. It was easy to tell if the trains were headed for the Central or W&C line, as they had very different liveries. Alas, this was before I had a digital camera, so I never got a photo. |

There's a video on Youtube somewhere where the 482's can be seen at Stratford, Leyton and Leytonstone. I'll have a look for it but it's possible it's been removed |

I left the employ of BR in august 1988 so can't comment on what happened after that.
