But why was this location chosen for 16 January? Original completion date for all of the 4LM CBTC system.

Nope, it's only tangentially related to 4LM

Nope. SMAs, 4LM, cabin closure, etc, are all only tangientally related.

Is it to do with the plan to run extra Metropolitan tracks north from Edgware Road towards Kilburn? Maybe the (re-)opening of Edgware Road after upgrading to four platforms?

No, it's nothing to do anything that old. Thinking about @aetearlscourt's comment might help.

Going by the lack of collars on levers 33 and 36 I can't think who was operating the frame at the time...
(Sorry, I don't check the quiz section nearly as often as I should! Ahh, I miss Edgware Road very much. ðŸ˜

Is 16 Jan 1980 (40 years ago) around about end of co/cp stock, although I thought they were off EdgwRe Roads by that time. ( I never got to visit that cabin.

It was still possible to run 6-car trains to Edgware Road until that day, they sometimes substituted for C Stock

Was this day's quiz entirely an 'in-joke' then?
For the benefit of 'outsiders', why actually WAS the location chosen for that day?

The reason was that 16 January is MoreToJack's birthday, they were the last signaller at this location (Edgware Road cabin) and indeed the signaller on duty when the photograph was taken. They were (and I believe still are) rather fond of it too. A about 3-4 times a year at most the quiz requires knowledge of this forum that only staff and other long-term members are likely to know, and this is one of those occasions, the next one is unlikely to be before August. Whether you regard that as an "in-joke" or not is up to you. Additionally, there are two days a year that have a theme that has been running since the first year of the quiz. One of these, which has sometimes been made explicit, was identified by at least one person on the most recent occasion. The other has never been either explicitly called out as existing by me before, and has never been identified by anyone as far as I know.

That's fine. It's your quiz, and its content is entirely up to you. I enjoy the Forum immensely. It keeps me in the scene, during the gaps in my non-railway-related job. You must accept that it would be difficult for me to keep up with administrator's birthdays, especially from 200 miles North of Verney Junction.

My fault; I take things too seriously. It's plagued me since I was a kid.
