On the escalator down to the Victoria Line, multicoloured hand prints are now on the escalator, obviously indicating to people to grab hold on the way down.

Somewhere, and I can't remember where (Leicester Square maybe?), there is an escalator with blue footprints on the right hand side of every alternate step.

On the escalator down to the Victoria Line, multicoloured hand prints are now on the escalator, obviously indicating to people to grab hold on the way down. They've been there for five or six months now, and are part of the wider escalator safety trials that are taking place across the network. In true TfL style they were also placed on escalator 7 around two days before it was taken out of service for refurbishment... As you mention, some escalators have also gained blue footprints on the right hand side, and others have had "Hold the handrail!"-type notices added to the escalators. More "high profile" trials include the 'holograms' at Waterloo and King's Cross and the controversial "Stand on both sides" at Holborn. Some seem to be having a positive effect, others less so. I'll try and pull together all my photos of the various trials and post them up here. |

I was going to mention the hologram as well but thought that belonged in the other thread. Its strange, they only seemed to be on the down escalator and not the up one.   |

I wish I could tell you why they hadn't been installed on #8 - but I don't know! It's bizarre - it can't be because they're only on one direction because when they were initially installed, #9 (the current down) was out of action, so #8 (the current up, reversible) was the down and #7 (now out of action) was running up. Like most of the escalator trials, they appear to be having no positive effect at all...! |

There is also writing on the handrail at Euston, down to the southbound Northern and Victoria lines. It says something like "Hold the handrail!" (and it isn't even in any type of Johnston).

My favourites are the computerised signs where the "Stand on the right" signs would normally be, that can change between saying "Stand on the right", "Hold the handrail", "You are reaching the end of the escalator, keep moving as you alight" etc. Noticed these at Shepherds Bush and at one part of Euston.

It will not be long before the majority of the Underground is shut down on the basis that it is far too dangerous to get 'customers' up from and down to the platforms.

I was down at Charing Cross (jubilee line) looking at the trail markings a few months ago. Its good to see it now in public trials.

There must be a few trial sites then. I've not been to St. Pancras for months, and probably a similar time since I interchanged at Westminster other than westbound to westbound. |

I do like the LCD screens that swap between messages that are in the style of the more conventional 'Stand on the right' signs inbetween escalators. Can be seen at Shepherds Bush on the Central line.
Blue footprints also a good idea, finally the tourists and idiots know have a way to easily know which side to stand on and the handprints on the escalator handrail belt are a good idea too, nothing wrong with some encouragement to hold onto it!

Not a surprise, but surely that says more about how long a station escalator should be. I have to admit slowing down when walking up Angel, usually around the 2/3 mark. I'm getting old. Once upon a time I could do the whole lot without any strain. |

Liverpool Lime Street (Low Level) has something similar to that talking about how you should travel on Merseyrail. It's very bizarre. There's also something similar at Luton Airport talking about what you should do with liquids before boarding a plane. |
