It's officially recognised (in a report that I just made up) that Eastenders is harder to quit than heroin or smoking. For the non-saints among us (not failed wizards obviously) is Dirty Den still in it? |

The thing which amazes me about Eastenders (not a fan, sorry, but have seen plenty of the back ends of episodes waiting for Family Guy of an evening!) is that it is full of adultery, corruption, violence, murder and family breakdown, but in spite of all that no one swears. Not a foul mouth among them.
Also, no one seems to own a washing machine..

I seem to remember it was about someone called 'Ethyl' and her 'little willy'.
That was back in '89, and I haven't had to suffer it since.
Has it improved?

I've no idea but viewing daytime repeats of later series "Heartbeat" has me crying my eyes out in recognition of some of the worst scripting in living memory. It's a car crash and, being semi-retired with time on my hands, I can't help myself but watch it. In the series to date on ITV3, they've just killed off Constable Crane (never to be mentioned again) after just one season, probably for being the greatest wooden performer in television history and replaced him with someone who can act (from Casualty so I'm told), but has an obviously pathological contempt for the writing. Utterly hysterical!  |

Who gives a toss how terrible the programme is when the tourism keeps something like that alive? Also... try Thirsk for the Herriott museum. That's my country. I feel it in my bones.

We go there quite a bit for the railway jouney and the trout fishing prospects as it's not really that far away from where I live. It is very scenic although a lot of the local shops have, as you say become very dependent on the Heartbeat tourists. I've not tried that museum in Thirsk yet but may well do when the days get a bit longer.  Heatbeat's still terrible though! Today's episode featured the Sergeant keeping insurance fraud property in his locked wooden desk instead of (more sensibly) the station safe. He'll be off soon no doubt....... |

The NYMR trains actually run over NR tracks between Whitby and Grosmont, where the NR Esk Valley Line to Middlesbrough (built 1865) turns right and the NYMR (the original 1836 main line to Pickering) turns left. It was extended beyond Pickering in 1845 to join the York/Scarborough line at Malton. |

We don't usually go that far up the line when we use it. |

I loved "Heartbeat" for the very careful car chases in the cherished vehicles and the off scene noise of a crash then the carefully jacked up preserved vehicle and, usually, carefully placed trees or fencing - great stuff - story contents ballcocks though. |
