Is there ay OHLE on the DC lines...? No. I believe the plans are to use diesels. The engineering work schedule suggests no Virgins will get south of Milton Keynes during the work. If it's to install crosovers to allow access between ac and dc lines presumably both will be closed anyway during the work. I think the original comment was about Pendolinos using the connection once installed, which I think was made tongue in cheek. It would allow diesels (or ac/dc units) to cross over. Could we be looking at extension of Overground (or Met?) services to Tring and beyond? Or diversion of LM services via High Street when required? Or even a post-Croxley-and-post-Evergreen, Milton Keynes - Watford - Rickmansworth - Aylsbury - Milton Keynes circular service?

I just looked at the layout this morning. There is a junction between the DC and the Fast Down, very rusty rails! I thought they'd have removed it because of the high speed on that line... and there is a connection at the Euston end, as the Class 378s stable on platforms 9 and 12, which can also be used by the London Midland and the Virgin services. I'm more concerned with how they'll fit a 12 car into platform 10. Move the two junctions to the slow lines and join it into the line that goes to platform 11?

The connection has been used for the occasional railtour in the last few years. I last travelled over it in 2007, on the Silverlink farewell railtours. High speed isn't really a big issue, as the connection is trailing on the Down line. The connections are not at Euston, but at Camden Junction. Class 378s regularly run into the high numbered platforms (such as 17) at weekends (especially Sundays) and can access any platform with just a change from DC to AC. They also stable in the sidings between platform 15 and 16 and in the Camden Carriage Sidings.

If it's to install crosovers to allow access between ac and dc lines presumably both will be closed anyway during the work. The junctions at both end of Watford Junction will all be replaced / remodelled. Part of this is to allow bidirectional access to/from the DC lines, currently only northbound trains can run from the DC lines. Southbound trains need a double-shunt to the south of the station. Pendolinos could be dragged over the line, similar to what happened occasionally when West Coast services were still loco hauled (including the sleepers). However operation of diesel units or class 350/1s is more likely. To keep crew upto date, the 02.00 Sundays which runs over the DC lines could be operated by London Midland rather than London Overground (on behalf of London Midland) as happens now. Extension of Met line trains would require some new Met line stock and I don't know if class 378s are cleared north of Watford Junction (in passenger use anyway).
